Life Planners
Life Planners are new to me and I'm loving the Erin Condren but finding it a bit expensive. I could just be getting caught in the whole craze, but they are sooo lovely. I'm also looking at the Plum Paper Designs as it's more affordable and just as much personalisation options.
So to my readers...does anyone use a Life Planner? Which did you buy? Erin Condren, Plum Paper or something totally different? How are you finding it compared to your usual Kikki-K planners? Do you go all out in your weekly/monthly designing?

Time for Tea ~ Victorian Tradition
and its place in
THE HEARTBEAT THIEF
Victorian tea time wasn’t always a thing.
Tea has been around for thousands of years. In many cultures, it was customary to share tea with company. Tea was ceremonial, a sacred part of social law.
In England, mealtimes evolved to include two main meals: breakfast and dinner. Dinner became an evening phenomenon, which was held after the work day. In the case of the upper classes, dinner was an event that lasted hours into the night. Afternoon meals tended to light and on-the-go and had no real structure.
What we’ve come to know as “tea time” began with Duchess Anne of Bedford. Anne experienced a “sinking feeling” around three or four o’clock and would ask her maids to sneak her tea and pastries, since supper wouldn’t come until much later in the evening. At first, she had tea alone but eventually the practice was expanded to include her close friends.
Thus, a tradition was born and tea time became a thing.
Less food, more talking
Victorian tea time carried on the tradition of offering tea to guests. Tea was served in wide-mouthed shallow cups (nothing like our 16 ounce paper cups from the coffee shop). That way, tea could be sipped without waiting all afternoon for it to cool (or blowing on it, which could lead to sloppy accidents). Tea time became synonymous with company and socializing and was, in itself, a social event.
And Victorian events were elegant, spectacular things.
It was customary to have tea in the parlor or garden. It provided a chance to show off the hostess’s best china and linens, as well her abilities to command the skills of her kitchen staff.
Tea served not only to quiet the rumblings of a belly, it was food for the social soul. Dishes were customarily light and easy to eat without worry of a catastrophic mess. Eating was a dainty dance in itself.
Tea sandwiches, cakes, scones, biscuits, candies and nuts were usual fare for low tea (named for the low tables around which guests gathered—think “coffee tables” in the living room). I found a website with loads of recipes here: I refer to it often when I’m looking to create a special little something.
Trays of snacks were laid out so guests could serve themselves. Affluent hostesses could afford an elaborate tea service.
By comparison, my tea service looks like this
Not quite as shiny but it makes a perfect pot, every time.
The overall goal of these tea parties was to ensure that guests enjoyed themselves so thoroughly that they completely lose track of time, ensuring the hostess’s graceful place in the hearts and esteem of all invited.
Senza and her Tea
In The Heartbeat Thief our heroine, Senza Fyne, took much comfort in the ritual of tea time. Despite her longer-than-usual life, she never lost her affinity for a well-set tea. It connected her to precious memories of family and friends and times long gone by. Here’s a brief excerpt from The Heartbeat Thief, in which Senza prepares tea for company for the first time in a very, very long time.
The tea kettle hissed, the steam building up to a whistle. She plucked it off the heat before it could reach full shriek. She didn’t like noise. She’d become far too accustomed to quiet and stillness. It had been ages since she made tea, a proper tea with a full service and decorative sugars. She’d missed the routine.
Grandmother had always taken three lumps of sugar in hers. She’d preferred a Darjeeling, earthy and fragrant, over the milder Assams and startling Keemuns that Father would bring home. Darjeeling, she’d insisted, was an expression of liquid divinity. If you could taste the earth, you could touch the stars. Be one with everything.
Senza blinked, stirring herself from the hazy memory. Grandmother had always told her to live in the moment. Senza seemed only to live in the past.
Wrong moments in which to live.
She rubbed her temple with the bend of her wrist and spooned tea leaves into the pot. Funny that he’d procure a tea service for her in this rustic shanty, a proper set with a silver empress tea strainer and matching sugar and creamer pots. Odd that he’d provide a service for two people, especially since she’d always been completely alone.
Senza arranged the service on a broad silver tray and arranged a spread of biscuits onto a saucer, next to a plate of cucumber and spread cheese sandwiches. A small bowl of candied fruits completed the tea. All had been conveniently located in the small pantry, as if she’d shopped the list on her own.
Stepping back, she surveyed her work. Grandmother would approve. A good host always saw to the tea herself, taking every pain to ensure her guests lost track of the time of day.
Hefting the tray, she carried it into the front room, still startled by its shocking transformation. A small but cozy fire blazed in the simple brick fireplace, near to which an unfamiliar tea table stood. Hand-embroidered flowers trimmed the edge of the linen, matching the elegant bunch of flowers that topped a grey ceramic vase.
Senza enjoyed a small tea in that scene, but I love this post here because it shows a full elaborate spread that Senza would really have enjoyed. Now, THAT’S what I call a happy tea time.
Perhaps the next time you’re experiencing a “sinking feeling” you’ll treat yourself to a cup of Darjeeling and a cinnamon scone and have a happy moment to yourself (or, better yet, with a friend). There’s no reason to let go of the past when it’s full of sweet traditions like tea time. No wonder Senza Fyne never surrendered her fondness for the practice, even as the years took everything else away from her, bit by precious bit.

This is the word that came to mind as I read the last page of Modern Monsters. Themes within these pages are confronting, real, emotional and raw, so it is not for the faint hearted. Whilst it is still YA-appropriate, it is a very deeply engaging book, one that explores the seriousness of it's main theme, teen rape. However, do not be fooled, it is highly unlikely to be similar to any other books you have read on the topic.
This book explores this theme three-dimensionally, giving readers the insight not only to the victim's point of view (POV) but also the suspects and eventually the attacker. York deeply explores this theme and does not leave it as a black and white story, she explores in-depth the grey areas, and that's what makes Modern Monsters unique.
Vic is the main suspect to raping his fellow classmate, Callie at a party that he reluctantly attended. Callie professed that the last face she could recall on the night she got raped was Vic's. As Vic tries to piece the puzzles together, he finds an ally in a very strange place, Autumn, Callie's guilt-ridden best friend. The two soon find out that things and people are not always what they seem to be.
I really enjoyed the characters, I liked that Callie is not perfect, she was drunk, she could not recall who raped her, she made a mistake in identifying Vic...I just liked the realness of Callie's character. More often than not in stories like these, victims are just that, victims, and the rapists are depicted as nothing more than monsters, but I enjoyed that York provided us with characters that have dimension which made the story more real.
Vic is a kind-hearted soul and I thoroughly enjoyed his growth through the story. I enjoyed his relationship with Autumn, it was light and innocent which is totally opposite to the darkness that brought them together to begin with.
Autumn's character is beautiful, she is strong, a friend who would do anything for those that she love and I love the interaction between her and Vic, I really think that she's my favourite character.
I also liked how Kelley York wrote word definitions throughout the book, as Vic narrates, as that was the one thing he felt he was good at, memorising the meaning of words. That made me feel like I was Vic, which is a really great feat for an Author to have readers feel they are within it's pages, not to mention it added words to my vocabulary.
Modern Monsters is an engaging and emotional read. I enjoyed so many elements of this story and the plot is absolutely fantastic. Whilst the mystery was not difficult to decipher mid-way, I thoroughly enjoyed the way that the writer allowed the readers to get in depth within the lives of those touched by such crimes. York's main plot was not to point at the direction of prosecution for the attacker, but to let the readers understand what is going on in the lives of not just the victim, but the attacker, suspect and any lives that are touched by such events. The ending will leave a mark and it's definitely an ending that readers will not easily forget.
The Modern Monsters also has a sub-plot that is just as engaging and interesting as the main plot, and I am very content with how Kelley York ended the story, a lot of times stories are ended disappointingly, but York did a fantastic job in wrapping up all the loose ends in a way that satisfies the readers as they turn the last page.

I was introduced to Nicola's writing when I participated in Banish's blog tour organised by Harlequin Teen, so it was just an automatic reaction for me to want to read Vanish, Banish's prequel, since I absolutely LOVED Banish, click here for my review.

Nicola, prior to writing Banish most of your books were Adult
Romance, what made you decide to write a thriller and a Young
Adult for that matter?
A few years ago I got hooked on YA books. Twilight kicked off my
newfound desire for all things YA and I devoured as many YA
books as I could in the following years. I’ve always loved thrillers
(Lisa Gardner is brilliant!) so combining my two loves, YA and
thrillers, seemed a natural progression.
And Nicola still reads YA books, she just finished Divergent by Veronica Roth.

I know that this isn't a very original question but I really wanted to
know...where did you get the inspiration for Banish?
People are obsessed with watching YouTube clips.
Followed by the usual ‘what if’ question that sparks most of my
books…what if a girl saw something on a clip that she shouldn’t?
What if she saw a murder?
That’s how BANISH was born.
What made you write a prequel to Banish, Vanish?
When BANISH was published, I knew it would polarize readers.
Alyssa is a very angry heroine. She has her reasons so I figured
writing VANISH would bring those to the fore and explain a lot of
her rationale.
Choosing a theme song for Banish, what would it be?
Considering the hero Ronan is a sexy geek saxophonist obsessed
with jazz, it would have to be an old-time classic. Something by
Miles Davis perhaps?
You used to be a Physiotherapist, what made you move from
Physio to writer?
I’d been saying for many years ‘I want to write a book one day’ so
after 13 years as a physio, I stopped saying it and actually did it. I
was lucky to sell quite quickly. 54 books published and a decade
later, it’s still my dream job!
You’re also a reader, do you prefer hardback, paperback or
ebook?
Paperback and hardback are my first preferences. I’m a book-
sniffer since I was a kid so I love holding a book and that new book
smell.
I'm a fellow book sniffer, and many look at me like I'm going crazy when I tell them, glad I'm not the only one LOL

Can you give us any sneak peak to what's coming for the Soul
Retriever series?
Alyssa will finally confront her developing powers and embrace her
role as a soul retriever. But with her grandmother AWOL, her
mother enlists the help of Joel, the only guy who really
understands what Alyssa is going through.
He’s going to feature heavily in book 3 and will challenge Ronan
for Alyssa’s affections.
Sequel to Banish will be released in 2016, so keep your eye out for it!

BANISH raised a lot of questions about Alyssa Wood, the seventeen year old heroine. Readers wanted to know what made Alyssa so cynical and angry. So it was inevitable I had to write VANISH, a prequel where we get to see why Alyssa is the way she is.he has faced some tough stuff in her past, particularly with her mother.
But there is so much more to their fraught relationship…we get to see some of it resolved in BANISH but I have a feeling there’s a lot more to Alyssa’s story…
I think that Nicola pretty much summed it up in the paragraph above. Vanish is a prequel of Banish and you know how much I loved Banish, check out my review here.
Vanish is timed after Noah passed away and before Alyssa moves to her Aunt Angie's house at New York City. It gives us more of an understanding on what happened, how her and her Mother interacted before she moved and what made her move.

It's as if I'm living the opening segment of an apocalyptic thriller. Young family's rental car breaks down in the parking lot and they're forced to stay the night in dilapidated motel. Soon, the local townspeople morph into skin-eating demons and the family fights to survive until sunrise.
Maybe our situation isn't that dire, but it's close.
