So excited for today's post. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir is a loudly touted favourite and she's a debut Author who has just gotten a deal with Paramount to create this book into a movie...yes it was THAT fast! Congratulations to Sabaa Tahir for her wonderful achievements.

Ember in the Ashes tells a tale of two people from two very different backgrounds who cross paths in their adventure to seek out freedom for themselves.
Set in Ancient Rome where two class citizens fight to rule the kingdom. The Scholars who were overthrown and the Martials aka "masks" that now rule the kingdom. The resistance/rebel fighters are constantly seeking the opportunity to take back leadership, whilst the Martials continue to rule with an iron fist.
Laia is Scholar born and her Parents were the head of the Resistance, but both her parents died for the cause. Fate would have it that Laia would soon be in the hands of the woman that killed both her parents.
Elias is a Mask studying at the Blackcliff Academy, a school that trains Masks to be Martials, they are trained Assassins. He's main desire is to simply escape the life bestowed upon him through kinship.
Ember in the Ashes are told in alternating point of views between Laia and Elias. Their lives become intertwined and despite being on two different sides of the ongoing war between their people, they soon start to question where they stand, and why they are choosing to stand on those sides.
Ember in the Ashes is a wonderfully written debut novel by Sabaa Tahir. It is an intriguing tale that have you turning the pages rapidly. The twists and turns navigate this story well, and I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery that continued to be expelled at every turn. This story certainly grasps you from the very beginning and as you take your last breathe upon reading the novel you realise that you've been holding your breathe...yes it was one of those books!
Sabaa Tahir certainly has talent, she wielded this story and adventure perfectly, slowly manifesting information as it was needed and not a moment too soon, I really enjoyed this, as this is what kept me turning the pages. Not every mystery was easily guessed, which again is a fantastic part of this book as it kept me engaged and interested to keep reading more. Definitely looking forward to reading the consecutive books to this series.

~ Review ~
Confessions of an Angry Girl is certainly not what I expected in a good way. I actually don't know what I expected, but one thing I do know is that Louise Rozett excelled and surpassed my expectations. My predictable assumption of an angry teen who reforms at the end is certainly not what we get in Confessions of an Angry Girl, or I should say that's not ALL we get, this story has depth and it's characters are very multi-dimensional and the writing easily has the Readers delving into Rose's life as if we are simply part of the story.
Here are some other vocab words that describe my life: Inadequate. Insufferable. Intolerable.
(Don't know what they mean? Look them up yourself.)

Rose's life as she knew it changed dramatically after one of those early morning phone calls, the ones where you know that it must be something bad, as no one in their right mind would call at that time for anything else. Her Father has been killed in Iraq, whilst he went there willingly as an Engineer to raise more money so both Rose and her older brother, Peter, could attend College.
Rose is angry! She's lost her beloved Father, to what she feels was a totally avoidable situation, her older brother is running off to College, leaving her and her Mother alone to deal with their grief all by themselves. Her Mother, a Counsellor, can't seem to deal with her own grief, let alone help Rose with hers. That's just her problems at home. School is another story, she's crushing on an unavailable bad boy Senior, Jamie Forta, who happens to be taken by none other than the head Queen B cheerleader, Regina.
Confessions of an Angry Girl is Rose's journey as she tries to tackle all these problems and do it whilst staying sane and not attacking anyone!
When I was first introduced to the characters I was worried that it'd be stereotypical because we have:-
Best friend Tracy who is in love with a bad boy jock that Rose doesn't get along with because he treats her BFF badly.
Bitchy cheerleader Regina and her minions who torments Rose.
Broody and bad boy crush, Jamie, who's with the popular, beautiful but bitchy cheerleader Regina.
The "friend" that wish he could be more, Robert.
The confusing big brother Peter, sometimes fantastic and caring, other times...let's just leave it to confusing.
That's just a few of the characters above, so as you see where I thought "Oh oh, this is going to be just like any other non-standout YA novel" but fear not, because despite the inclusion of these characters, Louise made the story unique, certainly not at all what I expected or guessed from the Synopsis.
Confessions of an Angry Girl is a well written YA novel, Louise Rozett can certainly write and create wonderful characters. Confession of an Angry Girl in three words; real, raw and heartfelt.

Paperback Princess Review
Tragic is a story of Rook, a 19 year old girl, alone in Denver, having just ran away from an abusive relationship and prior to that being raised in the foster care system. She is very much down on her luck, but when she is mourning the loss of a cleaning job after being accused of stealing, she goes to spend her last $10 on a Starbucks coffee. Fate works in strange ways, and as she's having said coffee a group of models come in and literally throws an invitation to a famous photographer's studio, Antoine Chaput, at Rook. Seeing the promise of money at the end of a photo shoot Rook takes her chance and runs to Antoine Chaput's Photography studio where she becomes the chosen girl for the "Tragic" campaign. This is the story of Rook as she tries to run from her past, tries to better her future, fit into the new world she's been thrust into and all the while trying not to fall in love with Ronin.
Rook is a very broken and tragic character. At 19 she had undergone far too many tragedy for her age. Despite all that she had gone through I still enjoyed her character because she was strong, self sufficient but at the same time she was real and I saw her insecurity at times through the book. I really appreciated having a realistic character and it made me more emotionally invested in Rook and I was cheering her on hoping that she got all the good stuff that she finally deserved. The plot itself wasn't amazingly unique but because of Rook and Ronin I was very much invested in the novel that I read it in one sitting.
Speaking of Ronin, Rook's love interest. To be honest I'm still not quite sure about Ronin, he is certainly swoon worthy, good looking and some times I felt his kindness seep through but there were other characteristics of his that I didn't like, most especially his sarcastic, violent and controlling tendencies. However, as we get through the book he becomes more likeable and as his life story unfolds also I understand him a bit more and he becomes more likeable to me.
Elise is one of my favourite secondary characters, she's Ronin's older sister and Antoine's girlfriend. Her character is very straight forward, business-like but at the same time she's very genuine and what she says upfront is exactly what she means. I love how she had Rook's best interest at heart, even against her own brother.
Tragic has an interesting plot with a unique backdrop of a photography studio specialising in erotic artistic photography, so it's certainly not a type of story that you've read before. It's also fast-paced and I read through the entire novel in one sitting. Huss created such fantastic characters that literally lift off the pages that each reader will be emotionally invested in each one that you can't help but keep turning the pages just to know what happens to each of the characters next. There are quite a few heated scenes, and those scenes are certainly not for the young adult age group so be forewarned.

“She is not a toy,” she hissed like a cat arching its back and instinctively unfurled her jet black wings tipped with scarlet, resembling an oil slick creeping outward in a pool of blood.
Sebastian felt Candra’s weight against him increase when she leaned forward to look over his shoulder. There was no longer merely a shadow of Ananchel’s wings. Candra’s warm breath made the hairs on his neck rise when she gasped at the sight of Ananchel’s magnificent, dark, silken plumage brushing against the unsuspecting dancers around her.
Sebastian knew Ananchel’s words were for Candra’s benefit. If it was to her advantage, Ananchel would be just as willing to claim Candra as he was.

“Excuse me,” Candra screeched from behind him, once again push¬ing to get past.
He heard her utter a small gasp and felt her breath against the back of his neck when all the air left her lungs. Just like everything he seemed to do lately, uncurling his wings wasn’t intentional. His only thought was to keep Ananchel away from Candra. As soon as his mind thought the word barrier, there they were. He was sure Ananchel could see his weakness; his desire to protect Candra at any cost to himself was perfectly apparent. He turned his head to catch a glimpse of the girl behind him, and her shocked eyes stared back at him. Her mouth was hidden behind her two hands.
“Go!” Sebastian bellowed fiercely to Ananchel without fully turning from Candra, his nails digging into the palms of his clenched fists.
“You go,” Ananchel laughed in return, apparently amused by Candra’s reaction.
When his eyes met Ananchel’s again, he confirmed by the way her smile faded infinitesimally that he had exposed himself. She had forced him to prove to Candra once again that he wasn’t human, not even in the smallest measure. He should have known she wouldn’t stop there. They had played this game a long time.
The trembling began in his stomach, shooting downward like tiny electrical pulses, and his already tense muscles tightened further. All over his body, his skin felt like it was on fire, and it made him shudder. He fought it, closing his eyes to keep from looking at Ananchel and keeping Candra out of his peripheral vision. He couldn’t look at Candra now. The volume of the music seemed to grow until the bass was an eruption inside his brain and every thump matched his heart.

Sebastian had showered and the scent of death and Guinness no longer clung to him the way it did to her. Instead, he smelled of soap, spices and heat. His damp hair brushed against her forehead. In moments like this, his embrace made her feel secure and loved unconditionally. On other occasions, it was much easier to doubt herself and doubt him. Watchers perceived an innate goodness in her that Candra wasn’t sure of. When given a choice between love and war, she was very much tempted to choose war. Sebastian made no secret of the rage in his heart, a rage she knew could easily destroy him.
“I do,” she murmured, shifting to sit across his lap and linking her fingers around his neck. As always, it brought on a strange little flutter in her stomach. Loving Sebastian was one of those things that was never meant to happen. It had blindsided both of them. If there were two people in the world less likely to fall in love, it was Sebastian and Candra.
She pressed her lips to his quickly, weaving her fingers up into his soft as silk hair. One of his hands tightened on her thigh and the other slid up her spine, stopping between her shoulder blades where his fingers spread out wide.
She pulled back and giggled when Sebastian’s lips chased her with a playful pout. “I wasn’t finished.”
“I haven’t brushed my teeth,” she told him, making a show of covering her mouth when she spoke. “Morning breath.”
“It’s eleven at night.” He pushed forward.
Candra applied pressure against his shoulders, blocking his advance. “And I need a shower. I smell like an Irish man.”
Breath left her in a whoosh followed by a squeal as Sebastian spun her around and pinned her to the bed beneath him. His full weight pressed down on her, giving Candra a comfort she didn’t fully understand. He made her feel protected, hidden away and small. She shivered all the way to her toes. Sebastian would die to keep her safe if he had to.
“Who would have thought I’d find the smell of an Irish man so appealing.” He breathed the words close to her ear and then glided his hot lips to the throbbing artery just below.

“You fight me on everything,” Sebastian reprimanded her, slipping his fingers between hers and clasping them firmly. “When will you ever give in quietly?” His eyes blazed and flickered to her mouth.

Carol Oates has never been one to remain still for long. After her parents' mad dash to the hospital through the empty city streets of Dublin, Ireland, Carol made her debut into the world in the early hours of Christmas morning. Since then her pace has not slowed down in the least.
Carol was introduced to the world of supernatural books when, as a child, her family moved to a coastal suburb on the northern border of Dublin known as Clontarf, famous as the birthplace of Bram Stoker, the prolific author responsible for breathing life into the legendary story Dracula. I'm so excited to be part of a J.A. Huss tour! J.A. Huss grabbed my attention when Tragic, a Rook & Ronin novel was released, and yes I absolutely LOVED Tragic's cover. So I definitely wasn't going to pass this opportunity to sample this Authors work. I've heard so many fantastic things about Tragic. Anyway, without further ado, I'd like to welcome J.A. Huss today as she gives us an insight of a day in her life.

A Day in the Life of J.A. Huss
Well, a day in the life of me is pretty boring. I am a full time writer, so much of my day is spent in front of a computer. I don’t really wake up at a certain time, so that’s kinda nice. But once I get up I check all my various emails. I have three – a personal one, a blog/author one, and another one that I use mainly for my editor. After that it’s off to social networking sites. I check in with my friends on Facebook, try and come up with something fun to post for one of my FB pages, and then head on over to Twitter. Most of my morning is just boring stuff like that. I might make some promo graphics and I always check sales to see how things are going. But mostly I just screw around and do a whole lot of procrastinating.
Then I hop on the treadmill for 30 minutes. Since I sit so much, I have to do this or I’d go crazy. Plus, almost all my plot ideas come to me when I’m on the treadmill, so it’s productive. After that I have to go out to the barn and feed my animals because I live on a small farm. I have donkeys, chickens, and ducks.
By this time it’s afternoon and I tend to start feeling guilty about not doing any writing, so I’ll usually sit down and get in a few thousand words. If I’m on a deadline I will write well into the night. After writing it’s time for blogging stuff so I’ll read, write up reviews, and schedule posts for the book blogs.
If I’m nearing a publishing deadline I might make covers or a book trailer or edit the book that’s next up on the schedule. At the very, very end of writing, just before the book goes to the editor for the first time, I spend days just reading the book, over and over, trying to catch all the mistakes and polish it up. I think it’s my personal goal to one day send a book to my editor, RJ, and have her send it back saying – “It’s perfect!” That will probably never happen.
But that’s pretty much it for the daily grind stuff. I rarely watch TV, but I’m a Spotify addict and listen to my playlists on repeat pretty much 24/7. Most of my evenings I spend reading and on the weekends I like to hit the movies or shopping.

Excerpt
There’s a flash of light, blindingly bright. Colored haloes obscure my vision. They dance and flicker and then disappear, leaving only a rectangle of light boxed in by the dark doorframe.
I see then that the door’s gone and in front of me are people. No…they aren’t people. They have limbs, hair, faces, but they aren’t human. After the first glance, they don’t look even remotely human. They’re pure, painful white, so bright they throw off a glare. They look like they’ve been dipped in glass, smooth and polished, but fluid. And their eyes…they’re a silvery color, like the mercury in the antique thermometer that my mom used to have at the side of the front porch.
When I was ten, I knocked that thermometer off with my wooden kendo sword, shattering the glass. The little blobs of mercury went all over the porch. I was a kid. I didn’t know better. I touched them, prodding the little balls until they joined the bigger blob. My mom swooped down on me and snatched me away, telling me it was poison. It could kill me.
I stare at the things in front of me: the Drau. I can’t look away.
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I remember Jackson talking about Medusa.
Don’t look at their eyes.
Their mercury eyes.
They’re poison.
They will kill me.

Locker 63.
My eyes sweep aisle after aisle until I find the one I’m looking for. It’s blue and unassuming, but it could unlock the secret to everything. I lick my lips as I insert the key, close my eyes, and with a prayer, twist.

The door opens, and inside I find more than documents. There’s also a pink hoodie, a duffle bag, and a fresh change of clothes.
What was I preparing for? What was I doing? I open the manila envelope on the bottom and flip through the documents—a lot of reports, surveillance photos, old newspaper clippings. I don’t have time to go through all of it now, so I stash them in my duffle bag and throw on some new clothes.
A tight-fitting t-shirt, pink hoodie, and comfortable blue jeans are my new outfit. It’s a weird choice for trendy, sophisticated Lara, but she was up to something big. Real big.
I lift the hidden duffle bag out of the locker, surprised at how hefty it is. I unzip it and find money inside. A lot of money. I touch it. Must be thousands of dollars bound together in neat little stacks.
My heart quickens as I wonder where it came from and what I was planning to do with it. If ever there was a moment for a flashback, it's now. A shining blue cell phone at the bottom of the duffle bag catches my attention. I pull it out and see a note stuck to it. In my handwriting.
Hide in the shower. Move fast.
Wide eyed and with a pounding heart, I slam the locker, grab everything, and run down the hall. I turn into the showers and duck into a stall, the vinyl shower curtain flapping against me. I still it with trembling fingers as I hear heavy steps enter the locker room.
