Veronica Roth Event

Source: Sydney Writer's Festival

I am so excited to talk to you about Veronica Roth's Australia visit! Living in Sydney, we don't get nearly as much Author signings as our fellow US readers, so when someone as HUGE as Veronica Roth comes to town...we get VERY excited! So without further ado, this was Veronica's visit at Seymour Theatre for Sydney Writer's Festival.

BTCYA Sydney; A Harper Collins Event

Between The Covers is a blog hosted by the Harper Collins Publishers team, hence the name BTCYA. I was so very thrilled to have been given an invite to this wonderful event and was beyond excited. This is the first time I've attended a blogging event and I went alone which was a bit intimidating as many of the old-time bloggers probably knew each other.

There were many giveaways, I was too embarrassed to raise my hand and answer the questions, but I was so jealous of the books that everyone got to choose. I didn't realise there were signed copies of Claudia Gray's Firebird Trilogy, I may have braved the embarrassment had I known LOL,

The host of the evening, Amanda and Tim were hilarious and I truly enjoyed the event. They ran through the books that are to be released in 2016 and a short snippet of what they thought of it. They seriously have the best job and they are total comedians! I'm sad to hear that they're leaving.

There were these gorgeous and delicious cupcakes, drinks and snacks.
And of course a table of books for sale courtesy of Dymocks. I really want to read The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand, Amanda and Tim really sold that book to me, and Peony Lantern by Frances Watts also sounds quite interesting.

All photos are sourced from #BTCYA Twitter courtesy of Harper Collins

We also got a very generous swag bag which included an ARC copy of Lady Helen and the Dark Days Club by Aussie Author Alison Goodman and Demon Road by Derek Landy, Author of the Skulduggery Pleasant Series, along with a beautiful poster of Claudia Gray's Ten Thousand Skies Above You, the second book to A Thousand Pieces of You, both of which I can't wait to read.

The tote bag is amazing, very sturdy and will definitely carry alot of books, which if you've been searching for a tote to carry multiple books you'd have found how hard that is to find.

Thanks so much for Harper Teen for the amazing event! And thanks so much Tim & Amanda for the very entertaining evening, I certainly would not have spent my Friday night any other way ;)

ARC August 2015

Read, Sleep, Repeat has been hosting ARC August for 3 years now and it's a really great time for me to catch up with my Netgalley ARCs along with other few ones here and there, but mostly my main goal is to catch up on my Netgalley ARCs, I know I probably won't ever have 100% as there are DNFs but I'd like to get at least the 80-90%, does anyone have 100% for their Netgalley? Click on the button above or the link to sign up, and hope to see you there!

Rules:-
The rules are very simple

  • It may be a physical ARC or and eARC but it MUST be an ARC
  • Yes it can be an ARC that has released as long as it’s an ARC I’m not going to nit pick much
  • HAVE FUN WITH THIS! Feeling like you are being “forced” to read is the best way turn a fun event into a yucky obligation
  • Update post! I personally will do a post for each Saturday in August but that’s just me. You can update once a week, every other week or once for the whole darn event. This update can be in the form of a blog or tumblr post, vlog, link to your “ARC August 2015″ shelf or even an instagram pic! I want to make this as easy and low pressure as possible for you
I'll update this once every two weeks to write the books I've read and to link my reviews.

Write On Review-A-Thon

Write On Review-a-Thon
The Write On review-a-thon is a monthly event created and hosted by Brianna at The Book Vixen. It’s 2 days dedicated to getting reviews done, whether you have one review to write or 30+. I missed out on last month's and nearly missed this weekend's one, I'm so glad I didn't. I was planning to do all the reviews for the books below in the next few days, so this is perfect timing. I'm so excited to be participating, I feel more accountable when I'm doing it in an event. So let's have fun and review, review, review!

The Summer Mini Bloggiesta for 2015 is coming up this coming weekend, June 13-14. Bloggiesta is a time where bloggers can come together and do some blog housekeeping (if you need ideas, click here) For all the official stuff and to sign up click here

Visit and comment on at least ten blogs Bloggiesta
Look into swapping to WP from Blogger

I hope everyone got their goals done for this Mini-Bloggiesta.

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, so I just went and read the entire Organisation part of the past mini challenges  and went from there. I did quite a few of the challenges but rather than naming all the challenges I will just list what I've done.

  • Created a Pocket (Read it later) and Evernote account...check out the past mini challenges post to see what you can do with these
  • Printed my Monthly Blog Planner from Confessions of a Homeschooler click here for your FREE copy and started to fill it out with pre-planned posts e.g. tours, memes.
  • Updated my GCal blog calendar
  • Fixed up my email so all my emails goes to my Gmail account. I couldn't make my blogging one on Gmail because the email address I wanted was sadly already taken ~ Email Best Practices by Heylade
  • Deleted some files that I no longer need ~ Digital Decluttering
  • Created 6 post templates (Review Tours + Blog Tour Guest/Author, Weekly memes etc)
  • Drafted 8 of my posts, but still have to put the main content, the review
  • Did quite a bit of research into the Migration from Blogger to Wordpress and even emailed a few services that do it to ask some questions
  • Visited and commented on quite a few Bloggiesta participants
So what did you get accomplished and most especially did you all have fun? I sadly did not get to participate in the Twitter chat, which I so enjoy when i do get to, but alas I just couldn't motivate myself to wake at 5 am.

Tell me all about your Mini-Bloggiesta weekend on the comments section, I'm so excited to hear everyone's progress.

COYER

COYER (Clean Out Your Ebook Reader) is a twice per annum event hosted by Fantasy Is More Fun, Because Reading and Books, Movies, Reviews Oh My!. It's a season-worth of fun stuff such as Scavenger Hunts, Readathons and Twitter chats. Click on the link #COYER or the banner above for all the official stuff like the rules, giveaways and schedule.

I will be updating this post as the event goes along, but for now...

My Goals

  • Participate in the Scavenger Hunt and knock out at least 10 categories
  • Participate in 2 Read-a-thons
  • Read 20 books average of 2 per week
  • Be supportive - 20 blogs/comment/tweet per week
  • Participate in one Twitter Chat
  • Participate in one of the Social Media Fun per week
The first Read-a-thon for COYER is the "Red, White or Blue" to commemorate the 4th of July Independence Day for the United States. So pick books that have Red, White OR Blue in the cover and a short review to enter in the Rafflecopter giveaway. For all the official stuff including rules and how to get bonus round points click here or the event button above.
COYER has started a few weeks ago and I haven't been participating as much as I had hoped, I had entered a few of the social media fun but I haven't been as supportive, I've achieved my reading of 2 books per week, but I haven't cross-listed it off my COYER list, so I don't know how many points I've gained as yet.

I've been very busy, since COYER began I've had a funeral, two birthdays and one week of school holidays, but I should be getting a bit more time now, so I will endeavour to change my lack of participation, starting with this Read-a-thon!

Armchair BEA ~ Introductions + TBR Rainbow

Armchair BEA (Book Expo America) is an online book convention that coincides with the BEA at New York City. There are plenty of us book lovers around the world that are unfortunately unable to attend BEA, the Armchair BEA has been created to ensure we don't fully miss out. I think it's a fantastic concept and an event that will allow me to meet fellow book bloggers, and Authors and Publishers.

Armchair BEA (ABEA) runs for five days, there are Instagram challenges, Twitter chats and more, here's the full schedule. If you want to join in on the fun and action click here to register.

Day 1 ABEA - Introductions

Tell us a bit about yourself: How long have you been blogging? Where are you from? How did you get into blogging?

My name's Angelica, I'm 32 years old and I live in Sydney, Australia. I'm a Mother to a 12 week old son, a part-time Step-Mum to 3 beautiful kids; 13 and 10 year old girls and 8 year old boy. I have four furbabies; a Maltese Terrier, American Staffordshire, English Staffordshire and a Pitbull.

I was born in the Philippines but have also lived in Hong Kong. I traveled a lot as a child but just back and forth between Hong Kong and the Philippines. I have visited Macau, China Singapore and USA. I absolutely loved the latter and wish I could stay there forever (especially when awesome events like the BEA takes place).

I have been blogging since 2008 when I started a private blog about my life in general, however, when it became apparent that 80% of my posts were doing book reviews, or speaking about bookish stuff, I decided to start a book blog. Serious book blogging did not commence till 2011.

Why do you love reading and blogging?

I have loved reading as long as I could remember. I was one of those children that was never seen without a novel. I was thought to be strange when I could read "chapter" books in one day, although said chapter books were only Nancy Drew and Sweet Valley High books, amazing but not lengthy. I had a short break from power reading when I hit late teens and early 20s, I went from reading a book a day to a book every two weeks.

The Harry Potter series brought me out from my reading diet, and the Twilight series was also one turning point for me in my reading life.

I love blogging for several reasons, but mainly because I have an outlet to my reading obsession, apart from my blog and the book blogging community I do not actually have anyone to gush about books to. Another reason why I love book blogging is because I have met fantastic people and have been introduced to many fantastic books and Authors that I would not have known about had I not been blogging. It has also been a very therapeutic experience for me.

What is one book everyone should read?

I absolutely love series' but I think that if an Author captivates a reader and impacts ones life in one book, then you know that book must be amazing. The one book that I think EVERYONE should read at least once in their life is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

What book are you reading right now?

Please keep an eye out for my upcoming review and I will also be kicking off the blog tour for this fantastic book with an Author Interview.

What is the top book in your TBR pile right now?

Instagram Challenge

I haven't really caught the whole Instagram craze as yet as I'm quite crappola at taking pics, but after seeing others' TBR Rainbows on Twitter I just had to do mine. I enjoyed putting it together that I decided to do a YA dedicated rainbow and a General Adult Fiction + Classic one.

I have now started an Instagram account just to be able to participate in this challenge. I really love how the YA one turned out, it looked more rainbow-like than the other. Which do you like better?

About The Books

Ember

by Carol Oates

Series: Ember #1
Published: July 19, 2011
Publisher: Omnific Publishing

When Candra Ember wakes up in hospital after a dangerous encounter with a red-haired woman, she is shocked to discover that seeing a winged boy wasn’t her imagination. Candra is exposed to a world of rivalry and sacrifice she never knew existed, and the aftermath of a war to save humanity thousands of years ago. Soon she finds herself relentlessly stalked by Sebastian, a beautiful and arrogant Watcher Angel and romantically pursued by his darkly seductive rival, Draven. Ultimately, dubious about her own goodness, Candra’s very existence compromises a tentative peace in the city of Acheron.

Excerpt

“She is not a toy,” she hissed like a cat arching its back and instinctively unfurled her jet black wings tipped with scarlet, resembling an oil slick creeping outward in a pool of blood.

Sebastian felt Candra’s weight against him increase when she leaned forward to look over his shoulder. There was no longer merely a shadow of Ananchel’s wings. Candra’s warm breath made the hairs on his neck rise when she gasped at the sight of Ananchel’s magnificent, dark, silken plumage brushing against the unsuspecting dancers around her.

Sebastian knew Ananchel’s words were for Candra’s benefit. If it was to her advantage, Ananchel would be just as willing to claim Candra as he was.

“This isn’t the time or the place for this discussion,” Sebastian told her pointedly.

“Excuse me,” Candra screeched from behind him, once again push¬ing to get past.

He heard her utter a small gasp and felt her breath against the back of his neck when all the air left her lungs. Just like everything he seemed to do lately, uncurling his wings wasn’t intentional. His only thought was to keep Ananchel away from Candra. As soon as his mind thought the word barrier, there they were. He was sure Ananchel could see his weakness; his desire to protect Candra at any cost to himself was perfectly apparent. He turned his head to catch a glimpse of the girl behind him, and her shocked eyes stared back at him. Her mouth was hidden behind her two hands.

“Go!” Sebastian bellowed fiercely to Ananchel without fully turning from Candra, his nails digging into the palms of his clenched fists.

“You go,” Ananchel laughed in return, apparently amused by Candra’s reaction.

When his eyes met Ananchel’s again, he confirmed by the way her smile faded infinitesimally that he had exposed himself. She had forced him to prove to Candra once again that he wasn’t human, not even in the smallest measure. He should have known she wouldn’t stop there. They had played this game a long time.

The trembling began in his stomach, shooting downward like tiny electrical pulses, and his already tense muscles tightened further. All over his body, his skin felt like it was on fire, and it made him shudder. He fought it, closing his eyes to keep from looking at Ananchel and keeping Candra out of his peripheral vision. He couldn’t look at Candra now. The volume of the music seemed to grow until the bass was an eruption inside his brain and every thump matched his heart.

Iridescent

by Carol Oates

Series: Ember #2
Published: October 16, 2012
Publisher: Omnific Publishing

Candra Ember used to dream of saving the world one person at a time. She never expected to become an angelic weapon and the last hope in the battle against ultimate darkness.

Falling for a Nephilim wasn’t part of Sebastian’s plan. Distraction is something he can’t afford when his rival, Draven, wants what Sebastian has.

Lies, manipulation, and corruption are twisting the lives of the citizens in Acheron. The Arch is missing from Heaven, and a demon is intent on claiming the city. At a time they should be growing closer, grief and paranoia is driving Candra and Sebastian apart.

If the price of restoring the Watchers to Heaven is a human soul, who deserves to be saved?

Excerpt

Sebastian had showered and the scent of death and Guinness no longer clung to him the way it did to her. Instead, he smelled of soap, spices and heat. His damp hair brushed against her forehead. In moments like this, his embrace made her feel secure and loved unconditionally. On other occasions, it was much easier to doubt herself and doubt him. Watchers perceived an innate goodness in her that Candra wasn’t sure of. When given a choice between love and war, she was very much tempted to choose war. Sebastian made no secret of the rage in his heart, a rage she knew could easily destroy him.

“I do,” she murmured, shifting to sit across his lap and linking her fingers around his neck. As always, it brought on a strange little flutter in her stomach. Loving Sebastian was one of those things that was never meant to happen. It had blindsided both of them. If there were two people in the world less likely to fall in love, it was Sebastian and Candra.

She pressed her lips to his quickly, weaving her fingers up into his soft as silk hair. One of his hands tightened on her thigh and the other slid up her spine, stopping between her shoulder blades where his fingers spread out wide.

She pulled back and giggled when Sebastian’s lips chased her with a playful pout. “I wasn’t finished.”

“I haven’t brushed my teeth,” she told him, making a show of covering her mouth when she spoke. “Morning breath.”

“It’s eleven at night.” He pushed forward.

Candra applied pressure against his shoulders, blocking his advance. “And I need a shower. I smell like an Irish man.”

Breath left her in a whoosh followed by a squeal as Sebastian spun her around and pinned her to the bed beneath him. His full weight pressed down on her, giving Candra a comfort she didn’t fully understand. He made her feel protected, hidden away and small. She shivered all the way to her toes. Sebastian would die to keep her safe if he had to.

“Who would have thought I’d find the smell of an Irish man so appealing.” He breathed the words close to her ear and then glided his hot lips to the throbbing artery just below.

Candra felt the warm, grainy flesh of his tongue peek out and swirl in a small circle over her skin. She bit down on the inside of her cheek to hold back the whimpering noise she was sure would escape her lips otherwise. She squirmed below him until she was breathless, and he dragged his fingers down the length of her forearms to secure her wrists by the side of her head.

“You fight me on everything,” Sebastian reprimanded her, slipping his fingers between hers and clasping them firmly. “When will you ever give in quietly?” His eyes blazed and flickered to her mouth.

About The Author

Carol Oates

Carol Oates has never been one to remain still for long. After her parents' mad dash to the hospital through the empty city streets of Dublin, Ireland, Carol made her debut into the world in the early hours of Christmas morning. Since then her pace has not slowed down in the least.

Carol was introduced to the world of supernatural books when, as a child, her family moved to a coastal suburb on the northern border of Dublin known as Clontarf, famous as the birthplace of Bram Stoker, the prolific author responsible for breathing life into the legendary story Dracula. This stirred in Carol an early passion for reading about all things supernatural. Combine that passion with a deep interest in the history and folklore of Ireland, as well as an active and vivid imagination, and Carol Oates the author was born. Carol's love of writing about anything not entirely "human" emerged, and the premise for her debut novel, Shades of Atlantis, was born.

Challenges - Title Scramble and Crossword Puzzle

This has been my most successful online read-a-thon to date. I completed ALL my goals!!!

I did extremely well at the very beginning of the read-a-thon because it was a weekend and I signed up to participate in many read-alongs which I was already behind on as I signed up a week into June, so that weekend I tried to catch up on the Read-along schedule. It seems the verdict is that Read-alongs are good for me, so I'll be participating in a few more of those if I can. Do you have any recommendations for monthly Read-alongs? I prefer discussion based and not just a review at the end.

I didn't do quite so well from Tuesday onwards as I was back at work after the long weekend. I'm still quite happy with the amount of reading I've done, I've already finished 2 out of 3 read-along reads (Hourglass and Eleanor & Park) which isn't due to be finished till the end of this month. I'm still to finish the 5th Wave for another read-along.

I had lots of fun and the only thing that I regret is not being able to participate in a Twitter chat. Looking forward till the next WWRead-a-thon!
