Author Interview Part 2 ~ Rhiannon Hart
1:38 am | Posted by
Unknown
Today we have the second part of Rhiannon Hart's Interview, focusing on her debuting series The Lharmellin Trilogy. Click here to view the first part of the Interview and click here to read her response to the Australia Day Feature Fun Quiz.
Who/What
inspired the story of the Lharmell Trilogy?
I
was at work (naughty) and daydreaming, and I had this idea that someone
was going somewhere with someone, and it was going to turn out to be
far more important a destination for them than the other person. As
vague as that. Stories never arrive fully formed. They're the slimmest
of ideas and then you tack other things onto them.
How
long did it take from the ideas conception to the first publishing
of Blood Song?
From March 2009 to September 2011
From
the beginning did you know it was going to be a trilogy? Or did you
write Blood Song first and then the rest followed once you got Blood
Song published
It was always going to be a trilogy. I love series.
Did anyone reject you for publishing?
Oh gosh yes. Dozens of agents. Plenty of publishers.
I don't really know much about covers and how much input the authors have in the cover-making process, did you get any input? Do you need to approve the covers of your books?
Not a huge deal, but my publisher did ask my opinion about the covers and I had some input. It was a fun process.
Are there any plans for a box set once the trilogy is complete?
Oooh I really hope so. They have been various ideas floated along those lines.
Can you please explain how/why you called your books what you did?
Blood
Song was originally called Lharmell, but that wasn't going to fly. So I
created a huge list of alternative names and sent them to my publisher.
Blood Song was at the top and she loved that. The 'song' is for the
eerie song the Lharmellins sing. Blood Storm came naturally from that
and is based on Zeraphina's powers that she gains in the book. Blood
Queen ... well, that would be telling *evil grin*
Can you give us any sneak-peek for Blood Queen? What to expect?
I
can tell you that it will definitely be the last book. I can tell you
that the setting will be in Amentia, Pergamia and Lharmell. I can tell
you that there will be several surprises ... and I can tell you that no
one knows what really happens but me (and my publisher and agent). Not
even my family!
Is there a release date?
Not
yet. But I hope to be able to announce one really soon. I can say that
if you're in Malaysia and Singapore, the book should be out there now
(or really soon). I'm meeting with the distributor there tomorrow. And
of course, the electronic copy is available everywhere now.
Any future projects we should keep an eye out for?
Yes
indeedy! I'm working on two standalone novels. One historical with
supernatural overtones, and one fantasy. The historical one is short and
sweet, and the fantasy could become quite epic in its scope.
Do you think you will continue to write for the Young Adult genre or will you try your hand in Adult Fiction?
For the moment YA.
What's your favourite genre to read?
It's so hard to choose. I love to read widely. I'm interested in everything.
In hind-sight, would there be anything that you would change in the Lharmell Trilogy? If so, what?
Nope, I love it just how it is :)
You're to be stranded on a deserted island; which one character from your books would you take and why?
I would take a brant, and get the hell outta there.
Thanks so much for having me!
Thank you Rhiannon for participating in my Australia Day Feature albeit late LOL and looking forward to reading the third book in the Lharmellin Trilogy.
Please also keep an eye out for my review post of Blood Song and Blood Storm which is coming very shortly.

Author Interview ~ Rhiannon Hart
1:49 pm | Posted by
Unknown
Today we have the lovely Rhiannon Hart back again for a two part interview. Rhiannon is the Author of Blood Song and Blood Storm, the first two books in the Lharmellin Trilogy. Today's interview will consist of personal "getting-to-know-you" type of questions. Click here to view her response to our Australia Day Fun Quiz and more info regarding her books. Please subscribe to stay tuned for Part 2 of her interview, which will consist of the professional aspect of her life.

Rhiannon Hart remembers writing before she could read, puzzling over the strange squiggles in Jeremiah and the Dark Woods by Janet and Alan Ahlberg and putting her own words in their places. Her first love was Jareth the Goblin King at the tender age of eight. She wrote fan fiction in high school but she'd never admit to it out loud, so don't ask. When she's not reading or writing she is belly dancing, chasing after other people's cats, or putting the pedal to the floor at her sewing machine. She grew up in north-western Australia and currently resides in Melbourne, where she works in marketing. Rhiannon has been published in the Australian Book Review, Magpies and Viewpoint and blogs at http://rhiannon-hart.blogspot.com/.
In
your Goodreads profile you mentioned that when your not reading or
writing you “chase after other people's cats”, do you mean you
don't like cats?
Oh, that actually means I chase after them to pat them! I love cats, and if I see one I just have to give it a chin tickle.
Belly
dancing and sewing are your other hobbies; what made you get into
belly dancing? Is it hard to learn?
I
love to dance, and belly dancing is very beautiful and exotic. It is
rather hard to get to an advanced level, but it starts easy. Wonderful
exercise for the lower back and abdomen.
What's
the best thing you've sewn?
I
have two things that I've made lately that I love. One is a blue and
green floral dress that I made from a gorgeous Austrian knit. I wore
that on my birthday. (Yes that's a spider on my glass. Plastic thank
goodness.)
The other is a loose drapey coat made from some of my nanna's
vintage fabric. Gorgeous with heels and skinny pants.
I
know you say not to ask about the fan-fiction, but I'll take a
shot...what book did you write the fan-fiction about? (It's ok if you
don't want to answer :D)
Haha,
you assume it's based on a book! Actually, when I was a teenager it was
extremely rare anyone wrote fan-fiction based on other people's books.
Mostly it was TV shows. I wrote Xena and Labyrinth fan-fic.
Your
going to Singapore...I've been to their airport, you can actually
have a whole holiday at the airport alone. Are you planning to stay
in Singapore for awhile or will you be coming back to Melbourne?
My
partner and I are staying in Singapore for a few days then traveling
up through Malaysia, into Thailand, north to Bangkok and then down into
Cambodia. We'll be staying in Phnom Penh, the capital, for ... six
months? A year? We're not entirely sure. But it's a new living
adventure.
Will
you continue to write novels whilst your in Singapore or is it your
downtime?
OH YES INDEED. The main purpose for me in going away is having lots of time to write.
(Goodie we can expect amazing new work from Rhiannon!)
(Goodie we can expect amazing new work from Rhiannon!)
What
are you currently reading?
I
have a new Kindle, and have discovered the Kindle store. I am reading
Danelle Harmon's de Montforte Brothers series, and have just finished
the second one, The Beloved One. Really lovely historical romance series
set during the War of Independence.
(Recently got into the ebook craze and starting to fall in love with it, I've got a Nook though.)
(Recently got into the ebook craze and starting to fall in love with it, I've got a Nook though.)
3-5
Unknown/Quirky facts about yourself that you don't mention in your
blog or no one else knows about you?
1. I am a very slow reader. I think it's because I'm a writer and I'm always picking apart people's sentences.
2. I
straighten my hair. It's normally this wavy mass, especially when it's
humid. I also have crazy hair envy for people who have naturally lovely
hair.
3. I
am going to be a bridesmaid! My cousin just got engaged and asked me.
We swore to each other as kids that we would each be bridesmaids at the
others wedding.

Australia Day Quiz with Rhiannon Hart
2:07 am | Posted by
Unknown
Today at Paperback Princess, I'd like to welcome our second Aussie YA Author for our Australia Day Feature; Rhiannon Hart. Author to the Lharmellin Trilogy.
I'll introduce you to Rhiannon's first two books; Blood Song and Blood Storm. We'll finish this post of with a fun Aussie Quiz!
I wanted to turn but I was held captive by the song on the wind. I’m coming, I told the voices. Please, wait for me.When her sister becomes betrothed to a prince in a northern nation, Zeraphina’s only consolations are that her loyal animal companions are by her side – and that her burning hunger to travel north is finally being sated.Already her black hair and pale eyes mark her out as different, but now Zeraphina must be even more careful to keep her secret safe. Craving blood is not considered normal behaviour for anyone, let alone a princess. So when the king’s advisor, Rodden, seems to know more about her condition than she does, Zeraphina is determined to find out more.Zeraphina must be willing to sacrifice everything if she’s to uncover the truth – but what if the truth is beyond her worst nightmares?
The rain wanted to be ocean; the ice in the mountain caps wanted freedom. I never knew that water held such longing. The clouds above my head rumbled like a growling wolf, impatient to release their burden. I held the rain there a moment longer. I turned to Renata, heard her gasp and knew my eyes glowed blue.
I spoke a single word. 'Rain.'
In the Second Book of Lharmell, Zeraphina and Rodden must travel across the sea to find the elusive ingredients that will help them to win the coming battle against the Lharmellin – but shadows from Rodden’s dark past may come back to haunt him. And while she learns to harness her new abilities, Zeraphina still fights the hunger that makes her crave the north – not to mention avoiding her mother, who wants to see her wayward daughter married to a prince at all costs.
Aussie Fun Quiz with Rhiannon Hart
Vegemite
or Nutella? Vegemite!
Koala
or Kangaroos?
Kangaroos, because they're much more interesting than sleepy koalas in the daytime.
Favourite
Australian landmark?
The dish in Parkes, NSW. A gorgeous thing, and a great movie too.
We're
known for our slangs, what's your favourite Australian
slang and for those that may not know what it means, what
does that mean?
Pash and dash. A pash is a kiss, and a pash and dash means you kiss someone and then run away!
Pash and dash. A pash is a kiss, and a pash and dash means you kiss someone and then run away!
Your
favourite Australian author?
This is far too hard to choose. You're twisting my arm? I'd have to say Isobelle Carmody.
What's
the one thing from Australia that you must have unlimited supply of
to take with you when you travel or if you were to migrate to another
country?
A warm pair of socks and a cardie. Planes, trains and buses are always over air-conditioned.
What
do you love most about being an Aussie or Australia in general?
How
friendly and approachable people are. I was told by a Frenchman that if
you are alone in a bar in Paris, even as a Parisian, the locals aren't
likely to befriend you or even talk to you. I find that rather sad. He
found Australians to be very welcoming and curious about his culture.
On
a more serious note, I'm proud about our auto and semi-auto gun buyback
scheme that was introduced after the Port Arthur massacre. No one needs
military grade weapons in their homes. It's one of the very few times
I've been proud of former prime minister John Howard and the way the
bill received bipartisan support.

Author Interview - Marianne de Pierres
1:11 am | Posted by
Unknown
Welcome to another segment of Australia Day Feature here at Paperback Princess, a commemoration to Australia Day by celebrating our fabulous Aussie YA Authors.
Today we have the lovely Marianne de Pierres once again, giving us insight into her Professional world. Enjoy!
You originally wrote Adult Fiction, what made you decide to try your hand at YA? Now that you've written both, do you have a preference?
I don’t tend to think of it as writing in genres. The story is what it is and the categorising takes place later. Having said that, writing for the YA reading market has given me the opportunity to interact with the fantastic YA audience. Their enthusiasm is so inspiring. I’ve truly enjoyed it.
What would you say is the main difference (if any) between writing Young Adult Fiction to Adult Fiction?
It’s commonly accepted that the age of the protagonist determines whether a book is YA and I guess that’s as good a measure as any. Most importantly, young people want characters they can relate to.
From doing some pre-interview stalking (LOL) I read that Burn Bright was in creation for approximately 10 years, did you know all along that it would be a YA novel? Did you always know that it would get published?
I didn’t know it would be YA to start with, and it took a few rewrites for me to settle on Retra’s age. However, I always had a strong sense that it would be published. Sometimes I get that about my books – a feeling that something is destined to be read by a wider audience.
The YA genre as a whole has had a recent boom, did you strategically submit/release Burn Bright at the time of the YA boom or was it just a coincidence? Had there not been a big YA boom, would you still have submitted/released Burn Bright?
The whole publication process is so slow and unsure, the idea you can jump on the bandwagon and catch it at the right time is unlikely! So, yes, it was really a coincidence for me in this case.
In a past interview, you noted that The Night Creatures Trilogy only came to fruition after Burn Bright had been contracted, did Burn Bright end exactly where it did in the book, or did you have to alter the ending of book 1 to cater for the following books?
The ending in Burn Bright was always there, but I did rewrite some scenes to make them less confronting. The early drafts had less hints at the back story which made it too confusing so I also included more information about Grave.
Burn Bright, Angel Arias and Shine Light are all very unique titles, what are your inspiration or why did you choose each of these titles for your books?
I had the idea for the title for book one, the other two titles were the result of discussion with my editors. We were trying to stay relevant to the books, and find a theme. And of course there was the amazing Kubicki covers to tie them in with as well. ~ I love, love, love your covers!
Your next YA series is called Emo Trader, can you tell us a little bit about this series? Have you started writing it already or is it still in it's ideas/creation stage?
It’s still in percolation stage – though I have written some notes. It is literally about a girl who trades her emotions to win back an object that’s important to me. I may end up writing some other things before I get to it. I’ll let everyone know when I know! ~ I'm already excited to read it, I like that idea of trading emotions to win back objects, very unique.
I rarely see Authors writing books for different genres. It takes a very creative person to be able to foray into a wide-array of genres, and to be able to do it as well as you have. Whilst most of your books are within the Fantasy/Sci Fi range, you also have Tara Sharp (Crime), Glitter Rose (short stories/novella/poetical/lyrical/romance) and of course The Night Creatures Trilogy (Young Adult)...what made you want to write within different genres?
I read fairly broadly, then I get excited about a genre or a style and that will send my mind sparking. The next thing I know is that I’ve written something different from the last thing. It seems to be a result of the natural ebb and flow of what interests me at an given time.
Do you find it difficult transitioning between one to another?
No, actually I find it keeps my brain sharper.
Which is your favourite genre to write in?
Whatever I’m writing at the time someone asks me.
Which is your favourite genre to read about?
Currently, it’s good crime – but you know, that’s likely to change at any moment …
You schedule your days as if you were working any other full-time job; 8am-3pm with a lunch break, five days/week...what do you do when you’re not feeling inspired to write, do you stay within your home office or do you take a rest and do something else?
Like a lot of writers I shamefully waste too much time on the interwebs and tell myself it’s research! If things are really stuck though, I go for a run. ~ I don't think that's exclusive to Authors, I think we ALL waste more time than needed on the Internet nowadays LOL
How many books do you write at a time?
Two is about my limit. Any more than that and I find I start to get too creatively tired.
Thank you Marianne for your time and I thank you once again for participating in my feature posts dedicated to Australian YA authors. I'm sure I say this for everyone, but we look forward to the release of the final book to The Night Creatures Trilogy and we certainly also look forward to your upcoming Emo Trader series.

First she must convince Ruzalia to help her. The fierce pirate captain saves those who face terrible fates on Ixion, but that doesn't guarantee their gratitude. Instead, she faces a revolt - and Naif is caught in the middle.
