Friday Weekly Features

What book that hasn't been turned into a movie (yet) would you most like to see make it to the big screen, and who would you like cast as your favourite character?
Going with the premise that the movie won't wreck the book, I'd like to see a lot of great books turned into a movie. I'll list a few of my faves:-

Prophecy of the Sisters series by Michelle Zink, Ballad by Maggie Stiefvater and the Paranormalcy and Heist Society series by Kiersten White and Ally Carter.

I also think dystopian novels like "Divergent" by Veronica Roth, "Eve" by Anna Carey and "Wither" by Lauren DeStefano would make great movies. The books in itself are so fast paced filled with adventure so I think these types of books would translate well into movies.

I'd also love to see "Saving June" by Hannah Harrington made into a movie but I doubt that any movie could capture the emotions behind this wonderful book.

Can you recommend actors that will go well with the characters of any of the above books?

Banned Books: How do you feel about the censorship of the freedom to read? Do you think the education system needs to be more strict on what children are exposed to in books?
I believe in the freedom to read as we please. I don't think it's up to the public to ensure that children don't read explicit books. I personally think it's the parents' responsibility. We shouldn't censor what they read but simply guide them. The maturity of each child is not something that can be measured with age, some children maybe capable of reading more mature novels, whilst others of the same age may not be able to. You as the parent should know what your child's personal limitations are and from there, guide them accordingly.

This week's Book Blogger Hop question:-

In honor of "Banned Books Week", what is your favorite banned or frequently challenged book?
Click here for the 2010-2011 PDF format of the banned books list or click here for previous years, courtesy of Crazy-for-books.

Choosing from the 2010-2011 list I'd say "Betrayed" by PC & Kristin Cast from "The House of Night" series. Apparently making children think of more things "sexual". I didn't feel that "Betrayed" was any more sexual than other YA books and it certainly wasn't explicit.

Another that I'd like to mention was "Twilight" banned in an Australian school...yes folks "Twilight" was featured in the banned list 2009-2010. A school banned it from their libraries for being too sexually explicit and they even banned children bringing their own copies into school.

Last but not least, this is really surprising..."The Diary of Anne Frank"! This was in the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 list. This modern day classic was requested to be banned for it's sexual content and homosexuality themes. The request for a ban was denied by the School Superintendent, it was kept in the curriculum but for the older grades.

Please check out the listing and the reasons as to why certain books were banned. It's a very interesting read. I cannot believe that "Twenty Boy Summer" by Sarah Ockler was included in the 2010-2011 list.
