Jessica Spotswood ~ Author Interview

I would just like to welcome Jessica Spotswood to Paperback Princess; Welcome Jessica!!! I was extremely grateful and beyond excited that you had accepted my request for an interview.

For those that don't know Jessica, she's an amazing Author who writes Young Adult, and has edited and written 3 anthologies/short stories to date. Her works include The Cahill Witch Chronicles, A Tyranny of Petticoats and The Radical Element anthologies written with other equally amazing Authors such as Marie Lu, Erin Bowman and Marissa Meyer! Here's a full list of all her books out as well as soon to be released work.

Anyhow, without further ado...Jessica Shea Spotswood.

Author Interview

1. Which of the Garrett sisters is most like yourself and why?

I think each of them shares some of my interests and characteristics, but I'm probably most obviously like Bea: an anxious perfectionist who's terrified of disappointing people I don't stress-bake but I do stress-eat baked goods.

I make lists for everything, and I also find being near the water very calming and re-centering.

2. Your books are written about sisters, what draws you to that theme?

I'm the oldest of three sisters myself. I'm fascinated by all relationships between women - mothers and daughters, sisters, best friends, frenemies, romances, rivals - but I'm especially interested in the mix of love and competition between sisters, of how we define ourselves in relation to and in opposition to each other.

3. If you were to take 1 character from each of the Garrett girls, what would it be and why?

Ooh, I'd take
Des's generosity,
Bea's ambition
Kat's fierce loyalty
Vi's confidence in being exactly who she is.

4. Which "sister" themed book would you recommend (aside from your own)?

One of my very favorites is CHIME by Franny Billingsley.

5. You're working at a bookstore...what's something unique only your store would have?

Realistically: signed copies of all my books?

Less realistically: it would be a bookstore / tea shop / cat cafe. :)

6 You're entering the boat race, what would your boat be called?

Maybe it would be Alice in Wonderland-themed, with everyone holding teacups and dressed up like the White Rabbit, the Red Queen, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat...

7. You write some amazing women protagonists, what are some attributes all your character must have?

Thank you! I think my characters have to be interesting and imperfect. They want things fiercely - they have big dreams for themselves - but they also have flaws that get in their way.

8. Where is your favourite place to write?

Coffee shops! It's basic, but there's a Starbucks in my neighborhood and I often camp out there with a venti green iced tea, my headphones in, and a white noise app.

9. What would you say was your defining point to being a writer?

After grad school, in 2006-7, I finally had time to read for fun again. I reread all my favorite books from when I was a tween, like ANNE OF GREEN GABLES and LITTLE WOMEN, and then I read the YA books that were enormously popular like TWILIGHT, VAMPIRE ACADEMY, WICKED LOVELY, UGLIES, & A GREAT AND TERRIBLE BEAUTY.

And then I started writing my own paranormal YA book - which didn't sell, but got me my agent.

10. The Summer of Garrett Girls in 3 words or 3 gif In 3 words:

sisters, summer, change

About The Author

Jessica Shea Spotswood

I grew up in a tiny, one-stoplight town in Pennsylvania, where I could be found swimming, playing clarinet, memorizing lines for the school play, or—most often—with my nose in a book. Now I live in Washington, DC where I can be found working as a children’s library associate for the DC Public Library, seeing theatre with my playwright husband, or—most often—with my nose in a book. Some things never change.

Thank you so much Jessica for participating in this Interview! I am eagerly anticipating Toil & Trouble due out next month and if you missed my review on Jessica's latest release (to date); The Last Summer of the Garrett Girls, please check it out here

Have you read any of Jessica Spotswood's books? If so, which one and what did you think of it? If you've reviewed it, please leave links on the comments section below so I can give it some love.
