Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop is a blog hop hosted by Crazy For Books. Please click on the link or button above for rules to join this hop.

This week's question is non-book related, but one that's very dear to my heart:-

Do you have pets?

Yes I do have pets. I've got 2 furbabies, both females. A 7 year old Maltese Terrier, Nikki and a nearly 18 months old American Staffordshire, Buffy. They are my babies as I don't have children and I love them oh so very much.

Here's a rare pic of my two girls together, however, Buffy (right) is no longer that size, this was taken over a year ago when she was less than 6 months old. I cannot believe how big they get so quickly. I miss them both being puppies.

TGIF #1

TGIF is a feature by GReads where you recap the week's happening in your blog and answer a question. Please click the link for the rules and to link up.

This week's happening:-

Which genre, authors, or particular books do you think people associate with your reading style?
Young Adult Fiction and Chic Lit. At the moment I'm really into dystopian and paranormal.

Fave authors include:- Melina Marchetta, Isobelle Carmody, Richelle Mead and JK Rowling just to name a few.

Feature & Follow Friday #4

I'm so annoyed as I did a Feature & Follow Friday post last week which also included the Book Blogger Hop and TGIF questions only to forget to post it, it was on draft!!! So I didn't forget to do it, I just forgot to post it LOL apologies.

"Feature & Follow Friday" #FF is a weekly blog hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read to expand your blog following amongst bloggers. There are rules to enter so please click on either of the hosts' links to join. This week's question:-

In some books like the Sookie Stackhouse series the paranormal creatures in question "comes out of the closet" and makes itself known to the woreld. Which mythical creature do you wish this would happen in real life?

Personally I wouldn't mind Vampires to "come out of the closet". I personally, ideally and imaginary world thinking, wouldn't mind being a vampire. Only because you get to stay young forever, hence I get to be with the love of my life forever as I simply don't feel that one lifetime is enough to spend with him. Then you also have the fact that because you have lived through so many eras you would be a lot smarter and you'd be able to invest in things you know will do well, hence you will live your "forever" life richly. Then there's also the powers of being a vampire. However, if I had a choice I'd also choose The Vampire Diaries vampire because they are able to go out in the sun, I couldn't imagine living in the dark forever as I love the sunshine and more a day person more so than a night person LOL.

I also wouldn't mind JK Rowling's world/characters to exist.

Here Lies Bridget by Paige Harbisson

Title:- Here Lies Bridget
Author:- Paige Harbison
Publisher:- Harlequin Teen
Genre:- Young Adult

Bridget Duke is the most popular and meanest girl in school. Adults, teachers and fellow students alike are intimated by Bridget...until Anna Judge arrives. Days after the new girl's arrival, Bridget soon became a leper at school. Her friends no longer worship her, Teachers are no longer standing for her disruption, other students no longer does as she asks and Liam Ward, her first and only love can't even look at her.

Depressed, she makes a choice to end her life. She changes her mind but a second too late, but instead of finding herself going towards the light or her life flashing before her eyes she lands in a board room with the Anna Judge herself judging Bridget Duke for the life that she has lived. Forced to enter the shoes of those lives she has ruined/touched, she must now face the consequences of her actions.

I was swayed to reading this book as I saw it in a lot of the blogs I read, the awesome book cover and ofcourse the enticing synopsis but I was deeply disappointed. I merely gave this book 2/5 in Goodreads. The theory of this story is brilliant but the way it was exercised lacked in depth.

Firstly Bridget Duke was a character, even towards the end was unlikable. Whilst I understand that is the point of the book, I was hoping that our protagonist would get to a likeable stage but I failed to get to that point. Others may have admired her or liked her at the end, but I didn't.

The progress of the story was disappointing, I felt that the author was dwelling on the aspects of before the accident too much, we didn't get to the part where she was to repent for her actions until right at the end, so ofcourse that part felt disappointingly rushed. From the synopsis it felt like that, that part of the story would at least be a main focal point. I really would have enjoyed it more had the Author allowed the redemption part of the book to come a bit sooner, maybe then I would not have disliked Bridget so much, that at the redemption part I felt no sympathy for her.

"The Girl in the Steel Corset" by Kady Cross

Author:- Kady Cross
Series:- The Steampunk Chronicles
Publisher:- Harlequin Teen
ISBN:- 978-192179312-7
Genre:- Young Adult Fiction

Finley Jane, a Lady's maid in 1897 London fights with a darker and dangerous entity within, one that comes out when she feels threatened. Lord Felix, the son of her Employer was unfortunate enough to feel the wrath of this "other side" of Finley when he tries to take advantage of her. Finley finds herself standing beside an unconscious Lord, mere moments after her anger overtook her. Finley's "other side" decides for them both that it's best to run away from the situation, a situation that could have her arrested...or worse!

Griffin King, Duke of Greythorne and his childhood best friend Samuel Morgan are riding around in their velocycle when they literally run over a girl. The danger oozing from the unconscious girl attracts Griffin in a strange, magnetic way and he finds himself wanting to look after the girl, while his friend does all to dissuade him from taking in more "problems".

Griffin and his friends; Samuel, Emily O'Brien and Jasper Reen have been investigating recent criminal activities within London. Activities that are being perpetuated by automatons (robots) and Peelers (Police) believe that it's a character that calls himself "The Machinist".

The group soon realises that the girl Griff brought home is no ordinary maid, they soon see the advantage in her joining their team. Sam on the other hand has a strong dislike for the girl that he fails to trust, he will do anything to ensure that his friends are safe, even if that means getting rid of Finley Jane.

According to the author, Kady Cross, this book is a cross between "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman" and the "XMen", this is the perfect description of this book. Whilst I was highly intrigued by this book due to it's enticing title, beautiful cover and interesting synopsis, I was slightly disappointed. This is my first adventure into the steampunk genre so I don't really have anything to compare it to, but I still gave it 4/5 in Goodreads.

I certainly didn't dislike it, but I had such high expectations for this book that it slightly disappointed when it didn't meet my expectations. I think that's the problem when books are publicised so much, readers end up having unrealistic expectations.

I did like the idea of the world that Cross created, it was very original and I'm sure that in Book 2 this series will be more intense. My favourite aspect of the story are it's characters, they were so likeable and their friendship and team work is what keeps you turning the pages, you just want to see what happens to each of the characters.

The mystery in the book was quite good too, it unfolds in perfect timing. However, once the perpetrator's character makes the appearance in the book, I kind of guessed he was "The Machinist".

This book is what made me decide on the mini-review as I have wrongly judged "first books" in a series before, only to be proven wrong when the consecutive books in the series are released. So I will leave it for now, till book 2...

Feature & Follow Friday #3

"Feature & Follow Friday" #FF is a weekly blog hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read to expand your blog following amongst bloggers. There are rules to enter so please click on the button above or either of the hosts' links to join. This week's question:-

How has your reading habits changed since you were a teen? Or if you are still a teen what new genres are you in love with currently?

As a teen I used to average a book daily, most are series' that I mentioned in the previous #FF so not long reads. I've gone through stages in my life, late teens and early 20s where I didn't read as much, but I've never stopped reading. However, as of late I've gone back to reading nearly as much as in my teens, I average about a book every 2-3 days now. In the period where I did not read as much, two series got me back into devouring a book per day; The Harry Potter series and Twilight series.

Lauren Kate Signing

In honour of "Passion" being released, author Lauren Kate has been touring. Prior to arriving in Australia she was in the Philippines (where I was born) and she has now since moved on to New Zealand. You can find out where she'll be signing here.

So on Sunday July 31st 2011 at Parramatta Dymocks I was able to meet Lauren Kate and get my "Fallen" trilogy signed! She was fantastic and the turnout was great! Here's a pic of the line, courtesy of Dymocks.

I had arrived so early as I had a prior engagement in the area, but I was at the front of Dymocks from 1pm (signing begun at 2:30 pm), at 1.30pm when no one was still in line I went out to the car to do some reading, returned at 2.10pm and there was at least 50 people in front of me! So I was quite annoyed to say the least...but it was certainly worth the wait.

The books below is what I got signed.

Now to finish this post off, I'm going to be giving away a signed copy of "Passion", (pic above) however, I'm yet to figure out how to do the form, so please bare with me and hopefully I'll work it out before this week ends. I'll have a blog post specific to the giveaway, so stay tuned!
