Release Day ~ Overexposed by Adrianne James {Giveaway}

Genre: YA
Publication: May 24, 2013
Publisher: Star Bound Books

Synopsis

In the tiny town of Willowspring, just about nothing ever happens except for layoffs, hockey games, and your average melodramatic teenage angst.

But that was before.

Vi, Ashley, and Macy are just trying to make it through the school year without one more humiliation when they team up for a simple photography assignment: create a story through a series of photographs. Can't be too much trouble, right?

Wrong.

The shutterbugs happen upon Willowspring High School's darkest secret. When everything around them starts to crumble after trying to do the right thing, their only hope is to stick together.

When the door opened to the alley behind the rink, I realized two things. One, it was freaking colder outside than it was in the bleachers by the ice, and two, Brianna Jones (A.K.A Bra stuffer) was already out there.

The three of us walked out as if it was perfectly normal to be there but Brianna didn’t even notice us. We walked to the opposite side of the alley and huddled together. We hoped it would look like we were keeping warm, but we were trying to hide both the cameras.

Watching Brianna was rather dull. She was just standing there, talking on her cell phone and it wasn’t even anything remotely interesting. We took pictures anyway, because like Mr. Bennett said, you need the before, during, and after to tell a story with photographs.

“Look! She is checking that car’s doors! That isn’t her car, is it?” The quiet clicking of the shutters on our cameras was almost deafening to me. I swore each click was louder and louder as we watched Brianna try to break into a car.

Finally, the last door she tried, the back passenger side, was open. She slipped in and a second later, the dark car had a red glow inside. She climbed back out, shut the door, and walked over to the wall, smoking a stolen cigarette.

“She just broke into someone’s car for a cigarette? Seriously?” Ashley was just as flabbergasted as the rest of us. Why would anyone risk committing a crime for a smoke? “Oh! She is moving again!”

Click, click, click. I took more and more pictures. I hated that they were all from the same angle, but spys have to do what they have to do to keep from being caught, all the while still getting the images.

Brianna walked back to the car and put the cigarette out on the hood. Lucky for whoever owned it there was a layer of snow to put it out before it could burn the paint. Then she leaned over and used the mirror. She pursed her lips, showed her teeth to check those, then she lifted her head slightly.

“What is she doing?” I whispered.

“I’m not sure.” Macy said breaking away from the group. “I am going over there, different angle.” Before I could stop her, she had gone back across the alley to the other side. She was braver than I was. Ashley watched her closely before turning back to me.

“Let me take some. I promise I won’t hurt Jilly.” I knew I had to hand it over. I promised her she could use it. Even knowing that, it didn’t make it any easier.

“Okay. Here.” I took the strap from around my neck and quickly placed it around hers. The minute the fabric was firmly against her skin, she took off, too. “Ash, what are you doing?” I whisper yelled to her.

She just put a finger over her mouth to shush me and she got even closer to the car than Macy had. I figured that made me look out so I opened my eyes and ears and tried to make sure my best friends didn’t get caught.

I looked over my shoulder to check the door to make sure we were still alone when all of a sudden I heard a scream.

“YOU LITTLE BITCH! GIVE ME THAT CAMERA NOW!” When I turned back to see what was going on (although I was pretty sure that either Macy or Ashley had been caught by Brianna) I saw my girls running towards me, with Brianna not far behind.

“Run!” Ash and Macy yelled through giggles. I turned and headed to the door and held it open for them. As soon as they passed through I closed it and the three of us went straight out the front door and to Macy’s truck.

“What on earth just happened?” I asked when I caught my breath. Ashley handed Jilly back to me and I flipped it on. The minute I pressed the play images button I began to laugh. The first one was of Brianna screaming at the camera. I pressed the next button and then it was a picture of her finger in her mouth. The next one was a picture of her finger in her nose.

I died laughing. Brianna Jones was a booger eater. I bet her boyfriend would love to know that.

“Oh, Ashley, you are amazing!” Then the truck erupted in laughter and because Macy’s dad had given her a twenty to get food at the overly expensive rink, we headed to the diner for some hot cocoa and French fries for half the cost. Who said teenagers were irresponsible with money?

Growing up, Adrianne couldn't get her hands on enough books to satisfy her need for the make believe. If she finished a novel and didn't have a new one ready and waiting for her, she began to create her own tales of magic and wonder. Now, as an adult, books still make up majority of her free time, and now her tales get written down to be shared with the world.

During the day, Adrianne uses her camera to capture life's stories for clients of all ages and at night, after her two children are tucked in bed; she devotes herself to her written work. Adrianne is living the life she always wanted, surrounded by art and beauty, the written word and a loving family.

As a young adult and new adult author, Adrianne James has plans to bring stories of growing characters, a little romance, and perhaps a little magic and mythology down the line for her readers to enjoy.

About Melanie Schulz

I live in Upstate New York with my husband and three children, where I’ve pretty much been planted my entire life. Which is fine, because it’s beautiful here. My only complaint is that most people assume that New York means NYC, which it doesn’t. There. I’ve done my part in exposing the truth. Truth. The truth is I’m not a writer; storyteller maybe, but not a writer. It wasn’t something I spent years dreaming of, or even what I went to school for. I’m a nurse. I love being a nurse. So why write? I don’t know. I do know when it started, though. September 3, 2010. I know this because I nature journal, and on that day Joel made it into my notes. I guess that’s fitting. Someone like him needed to be birthed out in the woods. If you were to meet me, and I hope someday you do, you would not connect me with this story. I’m a wife, a mother, a nurse. The person who wrote this should’ve been a guy, first off, secondly he should be some militaristic strategist; that’s who you’d expect to see if you were to come to a book signing, not me. But I’m there, in every line. So if I don’t have the good fortune to meet you in person, I hope to see you in THE NEWSTEAD PROJECT.

Author Interview ~ Top 3's

Top 3 things you MUST have whilst writing

Quiet, solitude, and something to write with or on.

Top 3 tips to combat writer's block

Make an outline, at the very least in your head, work on more than one project at a time, and music.

Top 3 schools you wish you had attended and why (fictional or otherwise)

Julliard, but I’m not musical or talented in anything they offer, so they did not accept me. It may have helped if I applied, though.

As far as fictional goes, I wouldn’t have minded going to Forks about six months before Bella showed up.

For the third: Culinary Institute of America; I love to cook.

Top 3 movies based at high schools:

Top 3 books based at high school

Top 3 memories you recall about your high school years

I really didn’t go to high school. I mean I was there, physically at least, but mentally I was elsewhere. I met my husband when I was fifteen. It was one of those moments when everything slows down and you can remember every single detail. That’s what meeting him was like. I just knew. And because he was so much older, he didn’t really want to go to things like dances, and proms, although I did talk him into going to my junior prom with me. He refused to go to my senior one. He was and is one of the best things that’s ever happened to me.

There's a fire…what's the 3 things you MUST take as your running out of the house?

Assuming my husband and kids are all out, I’d grab my laptop, family pictures, and my recipe album.

Your stranded on an island which of your characters from Newstead Project will you take and why?

Joel. Definitely. And after you read the books, you’ll see why. Let’s just say he has some very useful attributes that would make him particularly helpful.

Married for almost eleven years with two beautiful daughters, Sienna and Winter, Jessica knows her early age romance and its longevity has definitely contributed to how she tackles relationships in her YA novels. Jessica is now a full-time novelist and living her dream.

Eight People in Whose Life you'd like to live in for a day

Given that I’m a bit of a history geek I’ve used people both past and present – I hope that is okay!!

1. Shakespeare – just to be in a mind like that. It would be incredible.

2. The Pope – To see the daily function. The behind the scenes meetings and I would be intrigued to view the world from such a dedicated point of view.

3. The President – Well, hello! It would be cool to know what it was like to be the most powerful person in the world - for just a day.

4. Alexander the Great – so young and in a different world. It would be incredible to see the world from his point of view.

5. Napoleon – Again, for the reasons above. Just to experience what drives and motivates someone like him.

6. Cleopatra – A woman of such stature in ancient times. I’d love to see that!

7. C.S Lewis – As one of my favourite all time authors – to spend a day in his creative mind would be very cool.

8. My daughters – either one of them. I’d be very tempted to see the world through their eyes and know how they see their Mum and Dad!

The Rules for Disappearing

by Ashley Elston

Publication Date: May 14, 2013
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

Synopsis

She’s been six different people in six different places: Madeline in Ohio, Isabelle in Missouri, Olivia in Kentucky . . . But now that she’s been transplanted to rural Louisiana, she has decided that this fake identity will be her last.

Witness Protection has taken nearly everything from her. But for now, they’ve given her a new name, Megan Rose Jones, and a horrible hair color. For the past eight months, Meg has begged her father to answer one question: What on earth did he do – or see – that landed them in this god-awful mess? Meg has just about had it with all the Suits’ rules — and her dad’s silence. If he won’t help, it’s time she got some answers for herself.

But Meg isn’t counting on Ethan Landry, an adorable Louisiana farm boy who’s too smart for his own good. He knows Meg is hiding something big. And it just might get both of them killed. As they embark on a perilous journey to free her family once and for all, Meg discovers that there’s only one rule that really matters — survival.

Paperback Princess Review

The Rules for Disappearing is a fantastic, fast-paced and addictive read that has the readers wanting more at each and every turn. The plot was well thought out, clues was provided in the opportune times and there was a lot of twists and turns to keep it very exciting. The mystery had you guessing till the end and the conclusion was certainly not predictable. I cannot sing this book enough praises! Elston really excelled in the delivery of the plot, the story itself and the unfolding of information was well timed. An amazing debut novel!

Megan (Meg) Jones, the sixth alias and the sixth move since her and her family was entered into the Witness Protection Program. The constant moving is creating a huge strain on Meg and her family, she is tired of this lifestyle and she is determined to find a way out but to do so she must find the reason as to why her family was placed into the program to begin with, not an easy feat when no one wants to talk about it.

I really enjoyed Meg's character and I commend her for her strength to keep going. I really applaud the way she looked after her family and took on the role of a mother-figure. I also loved the relationship she had with her little sister, Teeny, it really reminded me of mine and my sister's relationship when we were growing up. Meg was also selfless, considering the rest of her family, especially her sister over herself. There were times when I just felt like she should have just gone with the flow, or allowed people in eg. Ethan, but I suppose I do understand why she's hesitant to allow others into her life especially when, by letting them in she endangers their life.

Ethan is Meg's love interest in the book and I absolutely adored the chemistry between these two, and unlike most YA books of late there is no instant-love here, there's not even instant-lust which is a very welcome change. I adored the slow but steady progression of their relationship and I really liked how it was realistic to teen love. I found myself swooning at certain scenes through the book and I cannot emphasise how much I loved the perfect timing and build-up to their relationship.

Ethan is a well written character, who I absolutely fell in love with. There is so much that I loved about Ethan, firstly his maturity. He wasn't scared to walk up to Meg and call her out on her lie, he was straight forward and had no fear in tackling the problem head on. Despite that he wasn't too pushy either and he still had patience with her. He would simply say "I can't talk you into…" and whatever answer she gave that was it, no arguments. He's also intelligent and loyal and I love the way he won Teeny over. Ethan is certainly on my book boyfriends top list.

There were several secondary characters that I loved, including Pearl, who's Ethan's Aunty and Meg's boss. She's that loud and obnoxious kind of character but deep down has a heart of gold. I also enjoyed Catherine, she really went out of her way to befriend Meg. Elston had a way of making her characters very likeable, even the bad guy wasn't terrible and I'm really curious to what his story is.

The way Elston wrote her characters dialogue was also fun and true to each character.

"I thought you'd be at school this morning."
Uh-oh. No way would the security guard that works in her neighbourhood normally ask her this question.
"Well, Frank, I thought since I live here that I could drive straight to my house without being stopped, so I guess we're both confused this morning."
I also enjoyed the Witness Protection Prisoner rules that Meg writes, which opens each chapter.
By Witness Protection Prisoner #18A7R04M

There's a time to cut and run. There's a time to stay and fight. The most important time is to know when to make this decision.

The Rules for Disappearing certainly exceeded my expectation from the synopsis. I absolutely loved this book and couldn't read it fast enough. The story was well thought of and the way the story unfolded to the readers was well done. This was all sealed with a very satisfying ending. Ashley Elston certainly excelled in her debut novel and I'm looking forward to her future projects.

Sometimes, even the best-laid plans can unravel.

It's spring break, and Tamara Winters would rather stay on campus and read romance novels than flaunt her size-fourteen body on a beach. But her best friend, Ronni, has other ideas. Against her wishes, Tamara is whisked away to picturesque Maverick Bay, where she's wrangled into waiting tables with Ronni at the Shore Shack for its busy week leading to Maverick's Surf Invitational. There she meets fellow schoolmate Xavier Solomon, the Invitational's organizer and campus womanizer by reputation. From the moment Tamara sees him emerging from the waves like a hero in of one of her romance novels, all she wants to do is run away from the feelings he inspires in her.

Little does she know Xavier has been watching her for weeks now. In fact, after failed attempts at asking her out on campus, he's concocted a crazy plan: fabricating romantic situations straight out of her favorite books. Xavier quickly realizes that if Tamara gets a whiff of his designs, he might as well spell CREEPER across his forehead. Yet as they grow closer, he's convinced it's a risk worth taking. What he hasn't planned on, of course, is his drug-addicted, alcoholic stepbrother, who decides to join the fun and put a wrench in Xavier’s scheme.

Spring break is proving hotter than Tamara expected. Will her romance novels be able to compete?

**Does contain strong language

I gather up all my clothes and stick them in the stackable washer in the closet just off the bedroom. The breeze caresses my naked limbs and gives me the chills, but I enjoy it. The goose bumps travel up my arms and spread out to my whole body. I shiver for a second and then head to the kitchen.

And stop dead in the living room.

Ronin fucking Flynn is sleeping on the couch.

What is he doing here? My eyes track to the front door and I suppose it's my fault, I left it open. There's nothing but a screen door between this apartment and the terrace. My gaze wanders back to the sleeping man. He's lying on his stomach, his one arm tucked underneath him, the other falling over the edge of the cushion, and he's shirtless.

And then I realize I'm naked.

"Shit!"

He stirs and I make a break for the bedroom. It's one thing to let him see me naked half hidden in darkness and quite another to be fully illuminated by the bright morning sunshine. I wrangle the sheet around my body and then head back to the living room, wistfully looking at the washer that contains every single article of clothing I own.

"Ronin!" I say loudly.

Nothing except a half-muffled snore from him. Lord, this man has the most perfectly chiseled and muscular back I've ever seen. Both hands pull up and go under his face, like he's blocking out the sunlight, and this gives me the perfect opportunity to study his flexing biceps. The muscles are thick and hard-looking near his shoulders. They curve down, dip into a little valley, and then climb once again.

I lean down and smell him.

"Why are you sniffing me?" he asks groggily.

"Uh—" Because you smell delicious, the inner Rook says. But luckily the outer Rook says, "I'm checking to see if you're drunk. Why are you sleeping on my couch?"

He peeks up, opening one eye in my direction, squints, and then croaks out some words. "I love your outfit." He grins, winks, and then drops his head back down into his arms.

"Are you leaving?" I ask, frustrated and confused at the same time. "I mean, why are you here?"

"I told you I'd come back with dinner. But when I got here, the lights were on and you were in bed. I only sat down for a second to think up a rational excuse to wake you up, but I guess I fell asleep." He raises his head again, grins sheepishly, and then rolls over on his back, tucks his hands behind his neck, and flashes his perfect body at me as he closes his eyes, probably confident that I'll be checking him out.

I do check him out. It's quite hard not to notice that he's got the perfect six-pack abs and that absolutely adorable fuzzy happy trail you see on a shirtless designer jeans model. Hmmmm… maybe he is that model? "You have no shirt on."

Yes, after all that gawking, I finally manage the obvious.

He opens the one eye to look at me again. "Neither do you."

J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. Her favorite genre to read is space opera, but since practically no one reads those books, she writes new adult science fiction, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, urban fantasy, and books about Junco (who refuses to be saddled with a label).

She has an undergraduate degree in horses, (yes, really–Thank you, Colorado State University) and a master’s degree in forensic toxicology from the University of Florida. She used to have a job driving around Colorado doing pretty much nothing but shooting the breeze with farmers, but now she just writes, runs the New Adult Addiction and Clean Teen Reads Book Blogs, and runs an online science classroom for homeschoolers.
