Publisher: Simon Pulse
A spine-tingling debut about the ultimate game of cat-and-mouse in reverse as a teen struggles to retain hope—and her sanity—while on the run from a cunning and determined killer.Ruth Carver has always competed like her life depends on it. Ambitious. Tough. Maybe even mean. It’s no wonder people call her Ruthless. When she wakes up with a concussion in the bed of a moving pickup trick, she realizes she has been entered into a contest she can’t afford to lose.At a remote, rotting cabin deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Ruth’s blindfold comes off and she comes face-to-face with her captor. A man who believes his mission is to punish bad girls like Ruth. A man who has done this six times before. The other girls were never heard from again, but Ruth won’t go down easy. She escapes into the wilderness, but her hunter is close at her heels. That’s when the real battle begins. That’s when Ruth must decides just how far she’ll go in order to survive.Back home, they called her Ruthless. They had no idea just how right they were.
~ Review ~
Ruthless is a brilliantly written, heart stopping psychological thriller by a debuting Author, Carolyn Lee Adams. Adams literally had me at the very first page when our protagonist, Ruth, awakes confused and unaware of her surroundings, she soon figures out through a series of flashbacks and questions where she is and that's when the fear starts, not just for Ruth but for its Readers.
Carolyn grips the Readers from the very beginning and you feel like your traveling alongside Ruth...actually scrap that, not alongside Ruth, but you are Ruth! The fear is tangible and I ripped through this book in two sittings. It was truly a dangerous journey and one that was quite intelligently written.
Ruthless is unlike other psychological thriller as we not only see through the protagonists POV but we also see through the perpetrator's, this was cleverly done through the use of flashbacks. We see how the perpetrator saw Ruth and her actions, and we also see a few historical flashbacks from his childhood and his past in general.
The use of these flashbacks were A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! The Author did not just stick to flashbacks for a certain period but it jumped around from different parts of both Ruth and the Wolfman's (Perpetrator's) life but yet the Readers needn't be told when it was, Adams just writes these flashbacks so well that we didn't need clarification and it fitted in and out of the current story so well, I cannot help but gush about how well this is done, I would even go as far to say that this is the best use of flashbacks I've read to date.
Another amazing factor of this book is how Carolyn Lee Adams writes her characters. It's not just the usual Ruth is the protagonist who is a hero and Wolfman is the monster, her characters are real! Through the book we realise that Ruth isn't the innocent teen we thought she was; she had nasty tendencies, selfish, brilliant but knew it, a spoilt brat and one that no one liked. We also find out that Wolfman hadn't always been the evil psychotic person he is, he used to be a child that got the wrong guidance and Adams explained things through his POV. It takes a seriously talented writer to have the reader somehow understanding and even empathising at times with this perpetrator, who was a monster in every sense of the word.
Carolyn Lee Adams whilst a debuting Author is fantastic! She fast became on my "Author to watch for" list. Her thriller scenes were absolutely brilliant and it grasped me from my Kobo's screen. Through her thriller scenes I was breathless, perspiring and nervous, I was constantly awaiting for that pounce!
Ruthless is a fast-paced psychological thriller with amazing scenes that will have your heart loudly thumping and her characters, even that of her perpetrator was filled with depth, they could easily have been real characters. Carolyn Lee Adams writing was explosive and the use of the flashbacks was truly magnificent. I can't wait to read other books from this debuting Author.
