In the war against the Forces of Darkness, the Royals are losing. Princess Ivy is determined to end this centuries-long conflict once and for all, so her new battle partner must succeed where the others failed. Prince Zach’s unparalleled skill with a sword, enhanced by Ivy’s magic Kiss, should make them an unstoppable pair—but try convincing Zach of that.
Prince Zach has spent his life preparing for battle, but he would rather be branded a heretic than use his lips as nothing more than a way to transfer magic. A kiss is a symbol of love, and love is the most powerful weapon they have—but try convincing Ivy of that.
With the fate of their world on the line, the battlefield has become a testing ground, and only one of them can be right. Falling for each other wasn’t part of the plan—but try convincing their hearts of that.
Character Interview
Ivy has already documented her version of the events, but what about Zach’s? I was able to get an exclusive interview with Zach, although he was reluctant to share too much.
1. How did you get so good at sword fighting?
I started training when I was really young. My home village used to get attacked by monsters all the time, and...my parents weren’t really around, so I joined a band of fighters that went around battling the Forces. They weren’t trained in the way of the Royal Legion, so my fighting style is different than most princes. I’m a little...rougher around the edges.
2. There are a lot of rumors about your adventures. Are any of them true?
Honestly, you’d have to repeat them back to me. I’ve killed a lot of monsters.
3. Well, one of the rumors is that you’ve never had a battle partner before, another princess to share your Kisses, why is that?
The short answer is I do just fine on my own.
4. And the long answer?
...Next question.
5. What is your impression of Ivy?
She’s arrogant, and stubborn, and frustrating, but...I respect her.
She’s got a lot on her shoulders, and she accepts it all, not just because she has to, but I think because she wants to.
She wants to save the kingdom. She wants to be strong, not just for herself, like some of these other Royal idiots, but to end this bloody war.
She’s got cute freckles too.

6. What is the most fearsome monster you’ve ever fought?
I’d just started fighting with the Royal Legion of Saevall, and my commander, Weldan, had received reports of a wraith just on the outskirts of the kingdom. There had been a few corpses found getting picked at by sparrow harpies. It was obvious they were victims of a wraith attack because of the frostbite around their wounds.
See, a wraith’s hands are made of bone and they can freeze you on touch. I needed to prove myself to Saevall’s Council that I could get by without a partner, so I went off after the wraith on my own.
I tracked it down to a desert cave.
Wraiths move like living shadows, so when it came after me, I underestimated how fast it would truly be. Its fingers grazed my right side and I could feel the cold spreading across my chest like a sheet of ice.
I probably wouldn’t have made it if Weldan hadn’t followed me and came in with a mage who cast a few fire spells to slow down the creature and weaken it. I ended up killing it in the end, but it wasn’t without some help.

7. What is your favorite place to travel to in the Four Kingdoms?
If you’ve never been to the Fields of Galliore, you’re missing out on a sight.
The fields go on for miles and miles and miles. But it’s not all flat, there are hills and crystal blue creeks made of melted ice all the way from the Wu-Hyll Mountains. When the sun dips below the horizon it lights up the grass like stalks of emerald gems. Then, at night, the midnight foxgloves bloom. Not many people go to the Fields though. Ever since the goblin hordes started burrowing into the hills, no one has dared to venture straight through it. It’s a shame, because it’s beautiful.
8. No one else in the Royal Legion believes in Love, why do you?
My mother believed in Love and, among other things, she was the smartest woman I ever knew. For a long time, I believed in it because she did, because I was taught to believe it.
It wasn’t until recently...that I’ve come to know it exists.

About the Author
Lindsey Duga
Lindsey Duga developed a deep love for courageous heroes, dastardly villains, and enchanting worlds from the cartoon shows, books, and graphic novels she read as a kid. Drawing inspiration from these fantastical works of fiction, she wrote her first novel in college while she was getting her bachelor’s in Mass Communication from Louisiana State University. By day, Lindsey isanaccount manager at a digital marketing agency based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. By night, and the wee hours of the morning, she writes both middle grade and young adult. She has a weakness for magic, anything classical, all kinds of mythology, and falls in love with tragic heroes. Other than writing and cuddling with her morkie puppy, Delphi, Lindsey loves catching up on the latest superhero TV show, practicing yoga, and listening (and belting) to her favorite music artists and show tunes. KISS OF THE ROYAL is her YA debut novel.
