Blog Tour ~ Dead Silence by Kimberly Derting {Author Interview + Giveaway}

I am such a gushing fan at the moment! This is the first time I'm participating in a blog tour where I am a huge fan of the Author, prior to even blogging. Ok, I'm going to stop with all the scary fan-base stuff I might scare Kimberly off. So here we go, calm and collected this time ;)

Welcome to my tour stop for Dead Silence, the fourth and last "planned" instalment in the Body Finder Series by none other than Kimberly Derting!

I am very privileged to be part of this tour, but I'm even more excited because I have Kimberly here today with an Author Interview and a This & That Quiz!!! There's also an amazing tour-wide giveaway so make sure to enter, before you head on over to the remaining stops, schedule can be found here

About The Author

Kimberly Derting

Kimberly Derting is the author of the BODY FINDER series (HarperCollins) and THE PLEDGE trilogy (Simon & Schuster). She lives in the Seattle area, with her husband and three children, who often find the outrageous things they say either in the pages of her books or posted on Twitter or Facebook for the entire world to see.

 Author Interview

You mentioned in your Bio, that your Mom is the type to choose Circus over bills, if you could join the Circus, what would your act be?

I would love to say trapeze artist, because it looks incredibly exciting, but I’d probably be too terrified to take that first leap off the platform. So maybe I should choose something safer, like a face painter instead. That could be an act, right?

At a young age Kimberly stapled blank pieces of paper and tried to sell these "colouring books" to her neighbours...How much did you sell your DIY coloring books? Was there any takers?

I’ve never been a great negotiator so I would probably have accepted a penny if it was offered to me. I think the only takers were the people who thought I was cute and took pity on the fact that I was going door-to-door. Or maybe they just gave me some change to get rid of me.

Initially Kimberly's childhood dreams were to be a "lady trucker" and a veterinarian. I understand most kids like to be a Vet because they love animals, what was your reason for wanting to be a lady trucker?

When I was growing up, there was a little show on TV called BJ AND THE BEAR, starring a gaggle of “foxy” lady truckers. My plan was to have a boyfriend in every city, a faithful German Shepard companion, and a tricked-out sleeper compartment (you know, for all the boyfriends). Fortunately, I took Journalism in the 7th grade and fell in love with writing instead.

Kimberly grew up from a single-parent home and her Mother taught Kimberly and sibling how to live in a shoestring budget, what's your best shoestring budget tip?

Soap grafting! Come on, you know what that is. When your bar of soap is down to almost nothing and you introduce it to the new bar and try to make them stick together. My mom was a huge proponent of soap grafting ;)

You’re in a deserted island and can only take one of your characters, from ANY of your books, who would it be and why?

Probably someone strong (to carry firewood), and cute (so I have something nice to look at), but not too young (because I’m a grown-up, and...well, gross!), so maybe Uncle Stephen from the Body Finder series. He’s a cop and seems like he could handle himself in a sticky situation. Where’s a YA character that can build a boat when you need one???

You meet a non-reader and you want to convince him/her to read Dead Silence, what would you say?

Assuming they’ve read the rest of the series already, I would tell them that Dead Silence is my favorite! It’s a little darker than the rest, and definitely gorier. The killer (and his disciples) are very twisted and worth the read.

What's your inspiration for The Body Finder series? Or how did The Body Finder series came to fruition?

The idea behind The Body Finder actually came from my husband, who said to me (one day while we were driving): “What if there was a kid who could find dead bodies?” Of course, in his head it was a middle school boy, because that’s how he thinks. But I loved the idea…as long as it was a girl, and she was in high school, and had a love interest. It took some time to hammer out the rules of her creepy ability (how she would find the dead bodies), but once I did, I was obsessed with getting her story on paper. To this day though, my husband will still refer to himself as my co-author!

You've got a mascara fetish and have gone through a huge range, what have you settled on to be the best mascara?

I just discovered the best mascara ever, and you can quote me on that! It’s Loreal’s Telescopic mascara, but you have to get the “Clean Definition” one. Love-love it!

Any current projects you are working on that you can give myself and my readers a sneak peak into?

There is a project I’m working on, and I’m crazy excited about it. Unfortunately, my lips are sealed, at least for the moment. As soon as humanly possible, though, I’ll be telling everyone about it—I can’t wait to share this one!!!

Is Dead Silence the last book in The Body Finder Series? If no, how many books do you plan to have in the series?

This is the last book planned at the moment, but I am a never-say-never kind of gal...especially since I love these characters so much!

What's the story behind each of The Body Finder series covers?

The “flowers” on the cover are actually not flowers at all. It was originally designed for another author’s cover and then the concept was tossed. It’s this giant, three-foot fabric creation that was meant to be used as wings and they just repurposed it into the flowers for my covers. But my favorite part: It was designed by the guy who does the wings for the Victoria’s Secret Angels!

Kimberly, you've moved around alot, which is your favorite city that you've lived at?

I love where I live now, but if I could choose someplace I haven’t lived before I might try Charleston, South Carolina. I’ve been there twice and not only is Charleston this great college town rich in history, but the food there is FANTASTIC!!!

You love bubblegum, what's your favorite flavour/brand?

Nerds bubblegum. They’re really hard to find, so I once ordered a 20# box from Amazon. And I just told my husband that I need more for my birthday.

This & That

Coffee or Tea – Tea. Always!

Chocolate or Candy – Chocolate. Again, always.

Twitter or Facebook – Ooh, this is tough. Both. But maybe Facebook by a slim margin. I love seeing everyone’s pictures.

Email or Chat – Email.

Pen or Pencil – Pen. I hate writing with pencils.

Paperback or Hardback – Hardback for sure.

Synopsis

Violet thought she’d made peace with her unique ability to sense the echoes of the dead and the imprints that cling to their killers…that is until she acquired an imprint of her own. Forced to carry a reminder of the horrible events of her kidnapping, Violet is more determined than ever to lead a normal life. However, the people who run the special investigative team Violet works for have no intention of letting her go.

When someone close to Violet becomes a suspect in a horrific murder, she finds herself pulled into a deadly hunt for a madman with an army of devoted followers. Violet has survived dangerous situations before, but she quickly discovers that protecting those closest to her is far more difficult than protecting herself.

The Body Finder series has been praised as a “delectable blend of mystery and romance” (The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books), a “fast-paced, compelling read” (ALA Booklist), and as “imaginative, convincing, and successful suspense” (Kirkus Reviews). With a perfect blend of romance, intrigue, and suspense, Dead Silence continues this gripping series, delivering unexpected twists that will keep readers guessing until the very last page.

Paperback Princess Review

Violet has developed her own imprint after her kidnapping and this haunts her daily. Wanting to live a normal life she is denied this privilege when the drama follows her to school. A friend and classmate is accused of a horrific murder and Violet must now use her ability to not only find the killer but to also protect those around her.

Dead Silence is a much more potent and sinister book than the others in the series. Derting continues to write chapters dedicated to the voice of the Killer, which is one of the things I enjoyed about The Body Finder series, this aspect really made it stand out from the crowd of books with similar themes. However, in Dead Silence, the "killer" has followers, and it seemed more horrific than the other books. It was much more gorier in the details and I think what scared me so much is the realism of the story.

Dead Silence is the fourth and last instalment in The Body Finder series and I thoroughly enjoyed Dead Silence, and the rest of the series. The stories have been very entertaining, an easy read but with an edge of your seat plot. Each book in this series, I read rapidly as I wanted to know who the killer was, if I had been right in my guesses (more often than not I was incorrect) and I couldn't read through the pages fast enough. I'm a huge fan of this series and Dead Silence is no different.

Dead Silence is similar to the rest of the books in the series but amped a bit. Everything was more suspenseful, scarier and gorier. This book was downright scary. Violet and her "team" was enjoyable to read about and I really enjoy the secondary characters, I feel that the journey they have taken their readers on would not have been the same if their connection wasn't as good as it is. My only gripe with Dead Silence is that it didn't really conclude everything for me. I just wasn't satisfied with the ending and when I turned the last page, I just didn't feel like it was the end. I wouldn't mind reading more of these characters.

Kimberly should definitely move to Charleston! I live in Greenville and I try to go to Charleston at least once a year. Such a beautiful place! I love the "DIY Colorbook"; too cute! And about soap grafting: I have never been able to get them to graft together and stay. They always fall apart. So I use my soap until is a tiny little sliver and then let it go down the drain. Glad to hear she isn't saying never to another book set in the Body Finder world! Can't wait to read Dead Silence. Planning to have a Body Finder marathon with all 4 books and having a great time with the marathon and the chocolate that will go along with it!
