So excited for today's post. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir is a loudly touted favourite and she's a debut Author who has just gotten a deal with Paramount to create this book into a movie...yes it was THAT fast! Congratulations to Sabaa Tahir for her wonderful achievements.

Ember in the Ashes tells a tale of two people from two very different backgrounds who cross paths in their adventure to seek out freedom for themselves.
Set in Ancient Rome where two class citizens fight to rule the kingdom. The Scholars who were overthrown and the Martials aka "masks" that now rule the kingdom. The resistance/rebel fighters are constantly seeking the opportunity to take back leadership, whilst the Martials continue to rule with an iron fist.
Laia is Scholar born and her Parents were the head of the Resistance, but both her parents died for the cause. Fate would have it that Laia would soon be in the hands of the woman that killed both her parents.
Elias is a Mask studying at the Blackcliff Academy, a school that trains Masks to be Martials, they are trained Assassins. He's main desire is to simply escape the life bestowed upon him through kinship.
Ember in the Ashes are told in alternating point of views between Laia and Elias. Their lives become intertwined and despite being on two different sides of the ongoing war between their people, they soon start to question where they stand, and why they are choosing to stand on those sides.
Ember in the Ashes is a wonderfully written debut novel by Sabaa Tahir. It is an intriguing tale that have you turning the pages rapidly. The twists and turns navigate this story well, and I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery that continued to be expelled at every turn. This story certainly grasps you from the very beginning and as you take your last breathe upon reading the novel you realise that you've been holding your breathe...yes it was one of those books!
Sabaa Tahir certainly has talent, she wielded this story and adventure perfectly, slowly manifesting information as it was needed and not a moment too soon, I really enjoyed this, as this is what kept me turning the pages. Not every mystery was easily guessed, which again is a fantastic part of this book as it kept me engaged and interested to keep reading more. Definitely looking forward to reading the consecutive books to this series.

Review
Twisted by Holly Hook was an extremely unique concept that has yet to enter the general Young Adult Paranormal genre, and I very much enjoyed the concept and the ideas behind the story. However, I felt that some of the parts were rushed and I didn't get enough information on why and how and what for some of these things, but having said that, there was enough twists and turns and surprises to keep you glued to its pages.
I quite liked Allie and I felt that her attitude, her anger regarding the circumstances that she has reluctantly found herself in was extremely refreshing, she was truthful in her exploration of her feelings and I liked her pro-activeness.
I will be picking up the consecutive books to this series to see how both the writer, story and characters evolve. Whilst there may have been some information holes through the book, there was enough of the story for the reader to understand what is going on and the revelations, actions and surprising scenes were truly enough to have you fast-flipping the pages. It was quite a short read but I do look forward to the rest of the Deathwind Trilogy. Twisted has an amazing idea and concept and I cannot wait till Holly further explores and divulge more of the story in the next books in the series.

Hi Katy, I'm so happy to host you on my blog, I'm a fellow dog-lover, I have 4 furbabies and I just love them so much, they were my ONLY babies until 3 months ago when my baby boy was born. Anyhow, sorry to get side-track...
Congratulations on the birth of your baby boy! By the time this interview is published, I will have had my second little boy as well – I’m due any day!
How did the story of Guardian come about?
During one of my first years of teaching (I’ve been teaching for nine years now), there was a student in the middle school who had epilepsy. A seizure assistance dog accompanied her everywhere she went. Though I didn’t have her in class and didn’t know her personally, I was fascinated by the idea that her dog could sense her seizures before they occurred. I did some research on it, and the idea for Guardian was born.
Until I heard about your book I actually wasn't aware that they gave guide dogs to people with seizures, so glad this was something that I learnt. I have been donating to the guide dogs for the blind, will be looking into this now too.
You are a reader yourself, and like me you love the YA and MG genre, what makes you love those two genres over the adult genre?
You know, I always joke that my literary tastes just never matured. But I think that since I fell in love with reading as a young kid, those are the books that just really stuck with me. It’s not that I don’t ever read adult novels – I can appreciate Nicholas Sparks as much as the next girl – but the stories I’m drawn to are geared toward children and young adults. And I think that teaching them, working with these age groups every day, has something to do with that, too.
Is there a specific message that you want to get across in Guardian?
Well, I think the lesson that Kinsey, the main character, learns throughout the course of the novel is that there really is no “normal” and that she should not only accept but appreciate who she is.
I didn’t really write the novel to try to preach to kids about bullying, although that is a big issue in our society today and can be a dangerous one at that. But, it is because of the bullying of one student in particular that Kinsey goes through some serious self-doubt. So I guess I hope that if kids take away one thing from the book, it’s to be proud of who you are and not to let anyone else make you feel ashamed of your differences.
I'm guessing your a very popular teacher, we love teachers who teach us and support us but doesn't preach :)
You've been a reader at a very young age, what's the one book you feel that shaped your love for reading?
What a difficult question! So many books come to mind – as a kid, I loved Ann M. Martin’s The Babysitters Club and Babysitters Little Sister series, and anything by Judy Blume, Beatrix Potter, E.B. White, Lois Lowry, Beverly Cleary, or R.L. Stine.
But I guess if I HAD to narrow it down to one book that stands out from my childhood, one book that I’ve read over and over again, I’d say that one would be Just As Long As We’re Together by Judy Blume. I still remember the way it made me feel when I read it for the first time.
Judy Blume is fantastic and I was also an R.L. Stine fan.
How would you describe Guardian in a Tweet (less than 140 characters)?
Well, I guess I would use the tag line on the front cover of the novel:
“A love story between a girl and the dog who lives to protect her.”
You’re also a teacher, what advice would you give to your student's parents about how to encourage their children to read?
Well, there are a lot of great books out there, books of every size and subject. The trick is finding what interests your child. I can’t tell you how many kids I’ve had who tell me they hate to read, and then when we’re in the middle of a chapter and the bell rings, they’re the ones complaining because they have to wait until the next day to find out what happens.
If you can find the right material, they will enjoy it. The problem is, it only takes one or two bad reading experiences to put that mental block in their heads that tells them they don’t like to read. Parents just have to be persistent and research to find books that will speak to their children, based on their interests and reading levels.
What is the next book in your TBR pile?
I just downloaded the Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan. I read The Odyssey with my high school freshmen at the end of the school year, and some of them recognized the Greek gods and situations from the Percy Jackson series. Listening to their comparisons, the series caught my interest. I look forward to starting them!
3 Things you love about being a dog owner/lover?
I have four dogs…all of which I consider my kids. Things that I love about them are:
- They are all fiercely loyal and protective of our family.
- Every day, when we come home, they are so excited to see us that they just can’t contain
- They all have their own little personalities and quirks.
For example, my dog Poe is a very obedient dog and knows the rule that he's not allowed to get up on the couch, but it doesn't stop him from trying every day. If I'm on the couch, he starts by putting his front paws up there, staring at me the whole time. If I don't scold him, he will slowly slip one of his back feet up there, still watching me to see how I will react. He looks so funny, standing with one leg on the ground, and then suddenly he will slip the last one up there too, so that only the back half of his body is hanging off the couch. The he will inch his way forward until he's lying next to me. I make him get down, but everyday he tries all over again. I can just imagine him, thinking in his head, "This may be the day. Today, she may just let me get up there beside her."
LOL they are so like kids, trying to see what they can get away with.
3 Thing you love about being a Teacher?
I always tell my kids that when I retire, I’m going to write a book about all my experiences teaching – the crazy things I’ve seen and heard. There is truly never a dull moment in the life of a classroom teacher.
Three things I love are:
- Each year…no, each DAY…is different from the rest. It doesn’t matter how prepared you are
- I love working with the kids. Throughout the course of the year, they become “mine.” And
- I love my subject – reading and writing!
As someone who has grown up with a passion for books, what better way to spend my days than trying to help others learn to love them, too?
What can we expect from Katy Newton Naas in the near future?
Well, I just signed a contract for my fourth book with Clean Reads, another middle grade novel called Operation: Bully Renovation. I’m not exactly sure of the release date yet, but it should be toward the end of 2015. I also just submitted a YA to them as well, so fingers crossed on that one! I am working on a children’s chapter book series as well, and I’m hoping to find a home for it somewhere out there in the publishing world.
Life has gotten really busy lately with the birth of my second son, but I hope to just keep writing and getting my books out there into the world…it’s what I love!

From the time she was old enough to talk, Katy Newton Naas has been creating characters and telling stories. As a child, they sometimes got her into trouble. She knew she wanted to write books when she won a Young Author's competition as a second-grader for her short story titled, "The Grape Pie." Review
Most Likely To Succeed by Jennifer Echols is the conclusion to the Superlatives series and what a conclusion it was. I thoroughly enjoyed the entertaining and innocent short read and I cannot wait to read the first two books; Biggest Flirts and Perfect Couple. This New Adult Contemporary Romance was not necessarily an original concept but the writing, the characters and the chemistry between the star couple in this book made me giddy and swoony all at the same time, so I can only imagine the effect this series would have on teens.
"The Perfect Couple That Never Was," that's what the majority of the student population thought of Kaye and Sawyer, but it seemed that Kaye never entertained the possibility...after all she's been with her long-term boyfriend, Aidan for 3 years, but when the polls are returned, she can't help but start looking at Sawyer in a different way.
Jennifer Echol's character creation was truly amazing and I loved the realistic characters that I had a sneaking suspicion that these characters were loosely based on people that Jennifer knew. I loved the characters interaction and chemistry and Jennifer does a wonderful job in capturing teens in their true light. I can literally write pages on how much I love the characters, the character creation, the chemistry and interactions and on and on but I won't bore you all, just know that the characters made this book for me.
Sawyer and Kaye had a sweet, innocent kind of love but they had so many things and people blocking their way to happiness, but they deal with it well throughout the book. I loved how they persevered with their relationship despite knowing that maybe it would be easier to go their separate ways. I really felt that they dealt with most of the trials in a well and mature manner, and I'm so glad they got their happily ever after.
I loved the friendship between Harper, Tia and Kaye, I enjoyed the fact that they weren't your typical group of girls who all had the same interests, I really liked that Harper loves photography, Tia a bit of a playgirl and Kaye the popular cheer leader but despite their major differences they were still best friends. It's like their friendship has overcome the high school pressure from other peers and groups.
I also enjoyed the parts where we find out more about Sawyer and Kaye's history, I liked the revelations throughout the book e.g. why Kaye's Mum is the way she is, why Sawyer is the way he is to his Father etc.
Most Likely to Succeed is well-written with addictive characters that you want to pick up other books in the series immediately just to continue to live with them and feel the chemistry between them all. I sped through this book. From the very beginning, at the first Student Council meeting I felt the connection and chemistry between Kaye and Sawyer, that's why I couldn't put the book down, however, I was quite disappointed with the abrupt ending, this is truly the only complaint I have for this book. Having said that I will still continue to read Jennifer Echols books as this is a minor complaint compared to the enjoyment I have had in reading her books.

~ Review ~
Confessions of a Queen B is an enjoyable, entertaining and light read and I devoured it quickly but I wasn't a huge fan of the ending, but being a series I can understand this, and I am still looking forward to reading the consecutive books to the series.
Alexis Wyndham became Queen B soon after she was betrayed by her ex best friend who also happens to be the Queen Bee in her school. Everyone fears Alexis as she exploits scandalous events at school in her blog, The Eastline Spy. Alexis isn't concerned with making friends, she enjoys the fear that others have of her, she doesn't get picked on, and she lives her own life without the need for friends, but when she has the popular, gorgeous, Quarterback and High School sweet-heart trying to win her friendship she soon finds that she's not as tough as she thought she was.
Confessions of a Queen B is truly an entertaining read, it was filled with humour and sarcasm and I really enjoyed Alexis personality and the growing friendship between her and Brett. I enjoyed the depth of the characters, mostly Alexis and Brett. I liked how Brett wasn't perfect and that brought it to a more realistic level.
Another part of Confessions of a Queen B that I really liked was the blog posts from The Eastline Spy at the start of each chapter, being a blogger myself this really kept me entertained and interested and it gave me more of an insight on why people feared Alexis and also a little bit more about what type of kids Alexis went to school with, what happened at school etc. I found this writing technique to be fantastic and captivating.
Confessions of a Queen B is truly a light and fluffy Contemporary YA novel that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. The use of blog entries allowed me to be more personally connected with Alexis, and the relationship between Alexis and Brett was well felt. I liked the main characters, but I only gave it 3 stars because I didn't feel that the book ended with much resolution, however, I do understand it's a series and I enjoyed it enough that I'm really looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

A genie grants you three writing-related wishes: what are they and why?
First wish – I have the ways and means to write full time. I’m somewhat leery of getting things for free – ever read The Monkey’s Paw? But as long as this is a good genie, I’ll ask for enough money to be able to stay home and play with my imaginary friends all day. And access to good health insurance, just in case. (I know, that might be more than one wish, but this is a good genie, right?)
Second wish – A metabolism that lets me eat what I want and never gain weight. Okay, not like Stephen King’s Thinner, but at least be able to enjoy some ice cream or a Hershey’s with Almonds, without dreading stepping on the scale later.
Third wish – To be draped in jewels… Wait, no, that’s not my wish, I think Dressed to Kill’s Sherry King is taking over the post. I must have paused too long thinking.
A career I enjoy, good food (that doesn’t make me fat), those two are taken care of. I know, friends and family around to make me laugh and realized the joy of giving and receiving love.

Sisterhood is Deadly is a funny, light and fluffy chic-lit read with a dash of mystery. It's very sorority-filled so if you've been in a sorority you will find it even funnier as you'd be able to relate to what's going on. Unfortunately I did not go to College in the US so I was never able to be part of a sorority but I would have loved to have been so I love reading sorority books just to see what it's like.
Margot Blythe loves being part of a sorority, Delta Beta, so she continued to work for the Delta Beta head office when she graduated. Her job has her traveling the country helping other Chapter Advisors to solve minor problems, so when she was invited to her Alma-mater (home-Chapter) she was so excited to be back in her College dorm, but her homecoming reception wasn't exactly what she expected when the Chapter Advisor dropped dead whilst their doing their first Chapter meeting. She soon finds herself amidst a murder investigation and a sex phone scandal, can Margot Blythe save her precious Delta-Beta from this major PR drama?
Margot Blythe is incredibly hilarious, her immaturity and her all-consuming thoughts about the perfectness of Delta Beta is quite a laugh, I found myself laughing out loud so many times because of her naivety and ditziness. She reminded me somewhat of Reece Witherspoon's character in Legally Blonde.
"What were y'all reciting?"Casey is one of my favourite characters and I don't think that the book would have been the same without him and Margot's relationship. Casey is the PR representative sent from the Delta Beta head office, his main job is to ensure that the PR for the Sutton Chapter isn't damaged beyond repair, so when he arrives Margot and Casey goes all out to personally solve the mystery so that the Delta Beta name isn't tarnished.
"Objection!" I glared at him.
Hatfield looked stunned. "What in the world are you objecting to?"
"You're asking about privileged information!"
"Was a lawyer there? A doctor? A priest?"
Now he was talking crazy. "Of course not," I said. "You are asking about secret sorority rituals. We can't share those with anyone who has not been initiated, and that includes the police."
Sisterhood is Deadly is truly an entertaining and funny read. I know that sounds bizarre considering they're investigating a murder and phone sex scandal, and whilst the mystery comes together nicely at the end I think the main focus was more Margot and her saving the day more so than the mystery itself. I will definitely read more of Margot's story if Lindsay Emory releases more Sisterhood books and I don't think it'd be a bad idea, Margot can be like a sorority Nancy Drew.

ARC August 2015
Read, Sleep, Repeat has been hosting ARC August for 3 years now and it's a really great time for me to catch up with my Netgalley ARCs along with other few ones here and there, but mostly my main goal is to catch up on my Netgalley ARCs, I know I probably won't ever have 100% as there are DNFs but I'd like to get at least the 80-90%, does anyone have 100% for their Netgalley? Do you use bookmarks? If so, do you match them to the book you're reading or do you use random scraps of paper?

I'd love to answer that I have a beautiful bookmark which I use regularly when reading my books, but no...I'm a random scrap of paper gal, whatever is nearby at the time, I don't know why considering I do have bookmarks around.
However, after doing this topic, I'm going to find a beautiful personalised handmade bookmark from Etsy and I'll start using it. I won't be "matching" it to each of the books I read as that would get far too expensive, but I will make more of an effort in using a proper bookmark.

What is your favourite movie?

I know I'm cheating but I'm choosing the Harry Potter Series because it's really the only movie adaptation that I think is "good enough", it'll never be as good as the books, but the movie was done really well.
