Once Upon A Read-a-thon 2013 {Sign-Up, Updates & Wrap-up}
Once Upon A Read-a-thon is an annual event in it's 4th year running, hosted by the Reading Angels, Pure Imagination and Candace's Book Blog. It starts at 12:01am July 8th and goes till 11:59pm on July 10th. There will be daily challenges and a Twitter party on Wednesday 9pm EST.

1. Which book you are most excited to read in the coming year? It can be already released or coming soon.
There are literally hundreds of books I want to read both released and soon to be released. However, for the purpose of this challenge I'm going to list sequels to series I've started because I'm just dying to read the next book in the following series:-
- Cold Spell (Fairytale Retellings #4) by Jackson Pearce
- Rise of the Arcane Fire (The Secret Order #2) by Kristin Bailey
- Taste of Darkness (Healer #3) by Maria V Snyder
- Born of Deception (Born of Illusion #2) by Teri Brown
- Once We Were (Hybrid Chronicles #2) by Kat Zhang
2. Which book would you re-read if you had the time and weren't so busy reading ALL of the other good thing?
Definitely favourite series', all of the following I've got in box sets, so it's definitely ones that I plan to re-read:-
- Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling
- Lord of the Rings series by Tolkien
- Anne of Green Gables series by LM Montgomery.
3. If you could meet any fictional character who would it be and why?
It'd be a toss up between Evie from Paranormalcy by Kiersten White or Katarina Bishop from Heist Society by Ally Carter. I just feel like if I met either of these characters we'd hit it off and fast become BFF's. They are sarcastic, funny and kick-ass.

You're in a bookstore and you've just purchased 5 books you've been dying to read, when the apocalypse hits. (Zombie, Demons, Vampires, Dean Winchester vs. Sam Winchester (yes, I'm watching Supernatural reruns) I don't care what apocalypse). You've got one chance at survival, what 2 books do you take and what 3 other items do you take?
I wasn't going to answer this in a practical way but I just realised it was actually noted that it's a survival thing so I've changed my answers accordingly. My answers would have been very different if I didn't have to be practical about the whole survival thing LOL
Books
Encyclopedia - So I can find EVERYTHING from which plants are edible, how to do certain things etc. which can be very useful when your in the wild with not many resources.
Bible - I chose the Bible because it's a book that can be read from cover to cover several times over and over and you won't get bored from it.
Other Items
3G iPad with Charger - A multi-purpose item. I can use it to communicate with people, essentially use it as a phone via apps, I can load all my ebooks on it and read from it, I can use the internet and Google things I need to know, use it as a journal to journal the events that are taking place, can be used as a camera, voice recorder, torch etc.
Weapon - A weapon of some sort to help protect myself and family and also for hunting purposes. I'm tossing up between a gun and a swiss-army knife, the latter seems more useful for the basic necessities as well like opening canned foods, first aid things etc. you can't exactly shoot a can when you want to eat the contents, but I think for the purpose of protection and hunting maybe something like a rifle would be better. After all you need something to shoot all those zombies that get in the way.
Other Items

I just finished participating in the Summer Lovin Read-a-thon and did terribly in the reading department...I know, that kind of defeats the purpose of a read-a-thon. The last week I've been suffering a terrible flu so I was in a bit of a reading slump and was jumping from book to book as nothing was holding my interest or attention. So since I'm now in recovery mode and I'm not working for 2 of the 3 days of this Read-a-thon I'm hoping to redeem myself.

Excerpt
There’s a flash of light, blindingly bright. Colored haloes obscure my vision. They dance and flicker and then disappear, leaving only a rectangle of light boxed in by the dark doorframe.
I see then that the door’s gone and in front of me are people. No…they aren’t people. They have limbs, hair, faces, but they aren’t human. After the first glance, they don’t look even remotely human. They’re pure, painful white, so bright they throw off a glare. They look like they’ve been dipped in glass, smooth and polished, but fluid. And their eyes…they’re a silvery color, like the mercury in the antique thermometer that my mom used to have at the side of the front porch.
When I was ten, I knocked that thermometer off with my wooden kendo sword, shattering the glass. The little blobs of mercury went all over the porch. I was a kid. I didn’t know better. I touched them, prodding the little balls until they joined the bigger blob. My mom swooped down on me and snatched me away, telling me it was poison. It could kill me.
I stare at the things in front of me: the Drau. I can’t look away.
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I remember Jackson talking about Medusa.
Don’t look at their eyes.
Their mercury eyes.
They’re poison.
They will kill me.

I have to admit I did terribly in the reading department in this Read-a-thon LOL which kinda defeats the purpose of a read-a-thon, I did however have so much fun with all the amazing participation posts and generally socialising and interacting with other participants and the hosts.

Read at least 3 books OR 50 pages daily
I didn't complete 3 books, I did however, reach my daily quota of 50 pages/daily. I had a hard week when it came to reading, I'm very sick with the flu, working 9am-9pm for 3-4 days of this week and was on a bad reading slump. For those that have checked my daily updates, you'll see that I was chopping and changing from book to book like they were going out of fashion, nothing was holding my interest this week.
On a good note I participated in ALL the Participation posts, completed 5 challenges and did very well in the visiting and commenting on participants blogs. I was also very lucky to have won two giveaways, one from the Twitter trivia, an ebook from the choices listed and a the How my summer went up in flames by Jennifer S Doktorski prize pack from Love, Life, Read's Author Feature. I can't wait to receive it as I've had it in my wishlist for a few weeks now.
So...overall despite not having finished one book in this read-a-thon thus far I still had an amazing time and I can't help but feel that this read-a-thon was still a success for me as I met lots of awesome bloggers and also had a lot of fun which is the main goal. I also didn't do too badly in my goals and had I just gotten through two books I would have definitely blacked out my Bingo card.

It’s good to be Bad….boys that is!! Tell us which bad boys make your heart go pitter patter in all the wrong right ways!
I'm not a huge fan of "bad boys" anymore as I've had enough dealings with those to last me a lifetime in real life...so I had trouble trying to figure this one out, but I thought I was on a roll with the Participation posts so...
I took these casts from other blogs/websites, but they are sourced, only because I'm terrible at picturing characters let alone looking for an actor/model that looks similar to how I picture them.
The first person I thought of when I read this Participation topic was Damon Salvatore, this is the only time I've loved the bad boy over the good boy, not so much from when I was reading the book but when I was watching the show.

Below are my daily progress updates along with my participation and challenge posts. I have gotten way off track unfortunately. None of the books I'm reading is really grabbing my attention and I'm not feeling the need to flip till the end. I have been sick with the flu the last few days, a very bad one at that, so that maybe the reason why I'm all of a sudden in a reading slump. I really do hope I can catch up or at the very least do awesome at the 24 hour read-a-thon.

Do you like/dislike Rafflecopter and why?
I like Rafflecopter when I'm entering a giveaway, it's easy and most of the entries you can do within the Rafflecopter form, however, being the host of the giveaway there are some minor kinks that would be great if Rafflecopter can iron out. For example the duplicate entries option doesn't always work which is annoying because then I have to redo the whole form.

There are many books that I really enjoy and like, but there are only a few that really tug at my heart strings, really provides me a lot of food for thought, gives me lots of emotional turmoil and have me remembering my emotions whilst reading this book long after I've read the last page. Here's one of those books.

Unfortunately I'm unable to say WHY this passage made me cry without giving spoilers, but basically it was the dynamics in their relationship. Between the Lives was really emotional, the emotions between the characters exploded through the pages and this letter, which was the chapter before the last had me crying like a baby as I read it.

Being with you, loving you, making memories with you, fearing for you, wanting to show you the beauty of life instead of the terror - it was bitter-sweet, but more importantly, Sabine - it was real.
I know this is the part when I beg you to go on, live your life and be happy. But I don't need to say those things. I know you. Your lives will be extraordinary. You certainly made mine feel that way.

Page 99 of The Eternity Cure is actually a perfect page for this challenge, I'm kinda bummed that I can't include the entire thing in the challenge as it's that perfect page that can be chosen as a teaser. This page had humor, sarcasm, action and horror.
The page begins with a human woman attacking Allie (I don't know why) and Allie trying to fend off the human who seems more of a pest to her than a real threat. Allie tries to continue her conversation with Jackal. The human once again throws herself at Allie, Allie's instinct kicks in and the human find herself nearly split in half by Allie's sword.
Here's the last paragraph of the page:
"Okay." My blood brother nudged the corpse's leg with the toe of his boot. It flopped limply. "That's something completely new. Any guesses as to what that was all about?"

Aurora Sky Vampire Hunter Vol 1: Transfusion is our introduction to the newly created series by Nikki Jefford. Transfusion is a well written story that
was fast-paced, action-packed and extremely unique in it's entirety.
We have a reluctant heroine, Aurora Sky, who's main goal is to get
into college so she can move out of the dreary and cold hometown of
Alaska, but when Aurora gets into a fatal car accident her whole life
changes and she enters a world she didn't know existed and one she
doesn't want to part of. However, with no choice Aurora is now stuck
to make do with the life-changing card she'd been dealt.
Aurora Sky Vampire Hunter's main
highlight for me is it's originality. With every 2nd or
3rd book published in the YA genre being on vampires,
Jefford did an amazing job in standing out from the crowd. It's
refreshing and very much welcome to read a vampire novel that is not
similar to another.
Aurora Sky is a character that you
won't love all through the book, some may not even like her
at all, however, I am judging her character by taking
into account the circumstances surrounding her change. I can only
imagine what it would be like to get into a fatal car accident,
pretty much raised from the dead only to find out after recovering
that your life is no longer yours to live. All this life changing
decisions without her consent. Granted, many of Aurora's actions
annoyed me through the book, however, taking into consideration her age and the circumstances, I didn't think she did too bad.
Nikki Jefford's characterisation of
Aurora Sky is definitely one of my favourite part of this book. The
way Nikki wrote Aurora's character and emotions were real, truthful,
raw and very realistic. Nikki did not create an unrealistic heroine
who simply just went with the flow because that's what a good girl
does. I enjoyed seeing how Aurora's character grew, from being a good
teen who's main concern was college, to being a rebellious girl who
didn't really care about anything because she was so angry and
disgusted with what she has become, to acceptance...I very much
enjoyed the development and growth of her character.
The world creation was also wonderful
and I enjoyed the in depth description of how the Government Agency
changed people to become vampire hunters. There was no lack of
information and I wasn't left thinking; “how” and “why” and
“who”, which is mostly the case in first books in a series.
Aurora Sky Vampire Hunter: Transfusion
is a well written, original concept paranormal novel that those who
like vampire books would enjoy. It's a very welcome change to the
very similar plots that we see in many vampire books. Whilst the plot
itself wasn't the best thing about the book, it's originality and
Jefford's writing, characterisation and world building more than
makes up for it. It's definitely a novel that I would still very much
recommend.
